Yes, my son died with his seatbelt on. His passenger survived without the seatbelt. Cruel world.

I'm amused by those who think we need seatbelt laws for the sake of public safety.

Very sorry to hear this. Yes, the world can be cruel. Childhood cancers, girl I knew died in a car crash going on a mission trip, A family I knew had their house blown away by a tornado, only to have the father's father die a few days later (didn't live with them).

Now that you mention that I cannot remember the last time I remember putting on my seatbelt but I never don't wear it. It is that automatic for me.

Hell I feel naked without one. Uncomfortable, actually. But I, like everyone else, has heard that bs excuse many times (and that's doing a disservice to excuses).

I grew up never wearing a seatbelt, just as many other Gen X'ers. Hell, from time to time I used to ride in the bed of a pickup with all my friends. When in the car, we'd be all climbing around the back seat, nobody with a belt on.
Then, I grew up and in the mid 90's flipped a Ford Bronco II end over end one late night. I thought I was going to die in a split second as I was tossed in every single direction possible. My face slammed up against the windshield at one point and I was knocked unconscious. I was very, very luck to not be thrown out the vehicle.
Ever since that incident, wearing a seatbelt is of no question whatsoever to me.
Then, I grew up and in the mid 90's flipped a Ford Bronco II end over end one late night. I thought I was going to die in a split second as I was tossed in every single direction possible. My face slammed up against the windshield at one point and I was knocked unconscious. I was very, very luck to not be thrown out the vehicle.

I've been in two major accidents in my life. One at 18- no seatbelt. Major facial injuries, broken nose that was repaired with rhinoplasty, fractured jaw not fixed, and gives me a ton of problems now.
The second wreck, wearing a seatbelt, caused major damage to my neck and caused stenosis in my shoulder. The force of the seatbelt holding me in the seat during an accident caused the injuries. I t-boned someone who pulled in front of me going 45. I live with chronic pain due to this. I got no major payout because the driver was unlicensed -- in Texas, this makes them not at fault. Even if they were, in my case they were at fault. Not sure if I would have been seriously injured because my engine dropped, so I was okay, and probably would have just been banged up if I did not have one on.
Despite the chronic pain, I still wear one religiously.

If something is an accident, then I don't believe there should be criminal charges...that is what civil suits are for.
secondly, if someone's injuries are much worse because they failed to follow the law and wear their seatbelts, then the civil award should be reduced substantially to match the injuries that they would have suffered had they worn the seatbelt.

Early 80’s they had huge nationwide campaigns to get people to use seat belts. I am sure the younger generations that are in their twenties and thirties do not remember the campaign. Drivers Ed and parents probably pushed seat belts more for this generation along with automatic seat belts in 80’s and 90’s.
I seen more bad not wearing seat belts than good when going to an accident scene. Nothing 100% a bad accident is a bad accident. I would just want to stack the cards in my favor to survive.

I've always been a very reckless person, especially during my drinking years. I'm very lucky that I haven't gotten myself killed multiple times in absolutely stupid decisions.
That being said, I've always worn my seatbelt and couldn't imagine not wearing it. I remember when the law changed and my parents started making us wear ours. I was probably 10 or so. Before that, I have faint memories of laying on the back seat or floor board on road trips, but I distinctly remember when my parents started wearing theirs. From the time I started driving, it has been instinctive. Everyone I know wears their seatbelt. I had friends that had small pickups when we were teenagers and if we had 3, the middle guy never got a seatbelt and I hated it when that was me.

we dont need a law for seatbelts for adults..
but the laws for kids in car seats needs to be vigorously enforced... especially since most of the people toting a tribe of tots without car seats likely don't have insurance
