Well there’s the rocks. And also all that sweet Martian pussy.

The core of Mars is made of ice. Aliens built an underground reactor that can melt the ice and create an oxygenated atmosphere in which humans can live.

We're eventually going to figure out how to go farther in space and also run out of resources on Earth. We'll eventually figure out how to terraform planets. Mars is the only planet we can realistically land on to practice taking the next steps.

You have to start somewhere or we’re never going to find the planet with giant worms and spice.

Ray Bradbury wrote this short story in 1950
The Other Foot
Mars has been colonized solely by black people. When they learn that a rocket is coming from Earth with white travellers, they institute a Jim Crow system of racial segregation in retaliation for how the whites once treated them. When the rocket lands, the travelers tell them that the entire Earth has been destroyed by war, including all of the horrific mementos of racism (such as trees used for lynching black people), leaving few survivors. The black people take pity on the white travelers and accept them into their new society.

Let’s hope our alien overseers come back and uplift us before we all kill each other

Those are pretty big impediments.
Forgot climate

The temperature on Mars can range from -225°F (-153°C) to 70°F (20°C), with an average surface temperature of -85°F (-65°C).

The only "colonizing" I could ever see transpiring is one where we have a small group collecting resources similar to an offshore operation. It certainly would not be useful for #4 even if we did find an Earth-like planet. There'd be no statistical difference between launching from Earth or from Mars when talking about distance at that kind of scale

quote:I have no idea if colonizing Mars will ever be feasible, and I'm not terribly optimistic that we'll ever come close to achieving it, before we reset ourselves 10,000 years, but the idea is more "don't put all your eggs in one basket" than it is "move away from California."
Use a planet up, throw it away and destroy another one?
Point taken, though.

Mars has a very small magnetosphere. Forming an atmosphere that humans could live would be impossible.
Well we’d have to create something that can create a magnetosphere obviously.

You people are lunatics. A volcano explodes in the south Pacific in the 1800s and does more climate damage than all of the atomic and hydrogen bombs anyone has ever tested, worldwide. But keep on going.
To OP, I think it's fair to think that we're going to end up something like the Expanse once we go extra-terrestrial. I'm definitely Martian at that point.

Heard of terraforming bro?

I'm curious how we'd figure that out. But I think the bigger issue would (as always) end up being class warfare. You only ship colonists that serve a purpose, and then every one else yells "it's not fair."
You get a taste of this in Silo.

Matt Damon did it. He used his own shite to grow potatoes and then blew the thing up. True story

Why are we equating “colonizing” with exploration and research? Even if there is a long term manned station there it’s not colonization.
And the moon is the stepping stone, not Mars. It’s why the big project to put a refueling space station in lunar orbit is called “Gateway”
