Not a holiday, but I agree with the stupid part. Like people in NOLA need another reason to get drunk and throw up in the streets.

I enjoy it, go have a few drinks with friends, but yeah, it's kinda retarded. "Hey! We're gonna get as fricked up as possible and then repent!"
But then again, I'm not catholic so I'm not completely caught up on what yall do.

It marks the beginning of the Lenten season where deeply religious people give up meat on Ash Wednesday and Fridays. They then sacrifice by eating JUST a dozen chargrilled oysters and deluxe fried seafood platters on these days of deep thought ..

It is celebrated all over the world in highly Catholic populated countries. It isn't just a Southern thing.

It's the last bash before 40 days of Lenten sacrifice! It's a Catholic religious holiday, like with all other holidays has taken on an entirely secular life of its own. So please eccuse me while I sip my Crown Royal and throw some beads to this coed lifting her shirt to display her ample bosom

Let's go tear up some King crab legs and fried shrimp at L'Auberge on Friday and genuflect on our way out!

Actually, it's a celebration of when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, and he threw palm leaves at the Christians. That was the first documented Mardi Gras. Barrabus was the first King of Mardi Gras. It amazes me how few people know the religious history of this.
