I need to check out Chicago. I've only been to O'Hare, but I heard so many good things about the city.

Welcome to America.

People think it's only their state or city. Ya know what? It's the same everywhere. You are seen as a walking dollar bill, only needed to fill the "money-watchers" accounts.

And those people who care about the environment and drive electric cars, from whom they can't bleed some extra money for this? They raised their car registration by $100
So stupid.

I'd say I'd cross Illinois off the list of placed I'd move, but I can't say they were on it to begin with.

My wife and I lived in Lake View until summer of 2017. The cost of living finally drove us out.

Southport corridor was a fantastic place to live, but $6,000/yr property tax on a $500,000 three bedroom condo is just not doable. Blaine Elementary would have been an option for our kids but beyond 5th grade its private school or bust.

I love Georgia. Sure it doesn't have the character of Chicago, which is one of the great American cities, but it is a hell of a lot more livable.

Make the change... I can tell you from experience the only regrets will be a few evenings during the summer months when you remember the patios and outdoor activities that make Chicago summers amazing.

Check it out this summer. You'll love it.

Here's your list:

Visit a street festival or music festival
Cubs game/wrigleyville
Bar hopping in old town
Bike through Lincoln Park and party at the beach, grab a drink at Castaways (if you're an OT baller, rent a boat and party in the Playpen)
Walk through Millenium Park and check out Navy Pier (but don't spend too long or you'll go crazy...maybe check out the fireworks on Saturday)
Architecture tour

That's probably enough for a long weekend.

Thanks for the perspective.

You got out at the right time. My buddy (who posts here sometimes, bruco) used to own a half million dollar condo near the Southport Corridor. I think he said that after the last property tax increase his property taxes would've been around $12,000.

We rented a 40-foot boat that came with a captain and assistant for 6 hours last year for July 4th. Playpen was a blast. It wasn't mega expensive either (we had 12 people)

Not from May-September, and I say that with confidence. Chicago is my favorite city in the world for a few months out of the year. Unfortunately, it is a frozen wasteland the rest of the time, so I would never want to live there year-round.

As far as major cities go, Atlanta is mediocre year-round and hot as balls terrible in the summer.

San Fran and Seattle are cold and dreary.

Phoenix is like a blast furnace during the day, but can be a pretty cool place at night. However, it isn't anywhere near as convenient to get around as Chicago is with the L train. The same goes for Denver (which isn't far down the list from Chicago, as it is a great city in it's own right).

Salt Lake is much more boring than Chicago.

NYC is hot as balls in summer as well.

I don't know about Boston because I've never been, so I will withhold judgement.

So what does the fact that he lives in Baton Rouge have to do with anything?

That's like saying someone can't recognize shitty weather because they're not a meteorologist.

Former Chicago resident checking in (left about 2 years ago)- reading the list of taxes in your original post gave me some serious PTSD .It sucks because instead of nutting up and doing a proper pension reform, they're going to keep at it with these taxes and eventually businesses are going to pick up and move elsewhere. It's really unfortunate because Chicago is such a cool city. I have ever intention of visiting routinely once my kiddos are a bit older. There are things I miss, but I have no regrets moving out of IL.

Ya, it is. And that says more about Chicago than it does Atlanta.

Having lived in both, I can say that Atlanta does not hold a flame to Chicago.

The suburbs on the other hand... that is a different story.

I'll be back in town for work in a few weeks. Any interest in grabbing a beer at Will's Northwoods?

Not if you have money.
Chicago has the arts to the max, and it's only 2nd to NYC.

When I was condo shopping, proximity to Will's factored into my buying decision

So yeah, that would be cool. That renovated beer garden is awesome and gets going on Cubs gamedays or just nice summer days.
