Legalization should be left up to the people, not the politicians. A vote of the people should determine it.

I disagree with this because there is simply NO reason for it to be illegal.

I know.

But I end up caving to the pressure to vote for one of the 2 major parties, so it ends up Republican.

Should we go ahead and make alcohol illegal too?

No, they just went and voted.

How about the end of prohibition?

It's extremely common to celebrate the end of an oppressive, moralistic, and terrible policy.

I'm at the point where I think anyone who opposes pot legalization on this site is trolling.

IRL, its more about lobbyist money.

No, why? But with alcohol, there are actually reasons to justify making it illegal. It is physically addictive. It will kill you if you drink too much of it, etc. Those reasons for pot are simply not there.

Further, there are so many ways to use marijuana. Hemp seed oil can be used for fuel. Before WWI it was the most common light/lantern fuel in the country. Hemp seed oil can power cars if we wanted it to.

Fibers can be used for just about every textile known to man and are stronger, more durable, cheaper to make and better for the environment to make over cotton or any synthetic. The Navy used only hemp fiber ropes for naval vessels, and during WWII paid a small number of farmers to grow industrial grade hemp for ropes.

It is illegal thanks to J Edgar Hoover, the DuPont family, William Randolph Hearst and other industry people who sought to profit from illegalization.

Like I said, it will be made legal because of money that can be made from it. They (whoever they are) really don't give a shite about the safety of it. Same reason tobacco is still legal, even though we all know by now what happens to smokers eventually.

Well, I agree, but I worry that it will take longer than it should for the money to be made from legalization to outweigh the weight carried by people/industries/companies that have shite loads of money they stand to lose in the face of legalization.

It's worse than that.

It's taking away their right to all those sized assets that never quite seem to make it to those auctions.
Also, legal pot = loss of revenue to " fight the war on drugs".

Who's gonna bust all those 18wheelers that carry billions of dollars of weed "every single day!"

It's not the cops. It's the owners of the prisons. Who can pay off anyone they need to.

I meant that the jails are making money, not the cops. I was using "cops" in a general sense; law enforcement benefits from having warm bodies in jail. I think it was the Times-Picayune that did a good series about the amount of money being made from this and how LA's #1 incarceration rate is bringing in the big bucks. The money, along with the uber conservative mindset of much of the state, wants to keep the penalties high for weed. Like others have said, the younger generation of conservatives seems to lean libertarian. I'd include myself in that number.
