Give it a try, then come back here and let me know how fast it went away.

This works for me. It comes in foam and spray. Spray it on before you go to bed and make sure you are fully hydrated. You can get it most anywhere. I know for sure that Target sells it.

When they hit, I can't imagine much worse of a pain. When I had the last one a month ago, I actually passed out from the pain and fell and hit my head. Then woke up in pain. Not a fun night.

You may have something else going on, yes they are painful, but passing out?

You need electrolytes.

I used to just drop a bouillon cube in hot water then drink it.

or take some magnesium pills

And they are painful, i had one so bad in my foot i thought it was never going to go away and that my foot would be stuck like that.

Apparently pickle juice is supposed to be good for cramps.

That's bc of salt.

Someone mentioned potassium. Yes. And magnesium.

Pickle juice is good, but it's not because of the salt. It's because the taste triggers a muscle reflex at the back of your throat that decreases activity neurons that are thought to be misfiring and causing the cramp. It works too fast to actually be the salt. It's the taste instead.

Basically, your neurons are misfiring and causing the cramp. You taste the pickle juice, it causes the reflex and makes your body think it's getting what it needs (the vinegar and salt) and sends messages to the neurons to settle down. I have had leg cramp issues since high school (40 years ago) and this works better than anything.

It works for the same reason as pickle juice. It's the taste and the throat reflex that calms the neurons.

Bananas are an excellent source

I think avocodoes have 7 times more potassium..

OP get some blood work. Low iron can cause that to.

Don't just get a RBC count either. You have to all for iron and ferritin.

Hey another angle..
what meds are you on?
My mom was having terrible leg cramps and i had her stop taking her statin. That worked a little but they persisted. She then told me she takes aricept for memory.. major side effect is cramps. She switched off of that and they went away.

**** Bumping a year and a half old thread ****

I posted this thread and am back with a new issue I was hoping to get advice on.

I still get lower leg cramps periodically, but overall they aren't terrible like they were, but also not as frequent either so manageable.

Now, I'm having them in my upper thighs, and they are proving to be worse. I can't seem to walk them out, and they are quite painful and hard to find a position that provides relief. I only recently started having them.

I still have the pickle juice recommended, and I take magnesium each night. But that seems less effective on these in the upper thighs. They are also sore during the day. Ice seems to help once I find a position to be able to be still and use it.

I have my annual with my doctor next week, but wanted to see if anyone had had them in the upper thighs and what might have worked for you.

Thanks in advance for any additional advice.

I should have added, if this matters, that I get them less when I lay on my back with a pillow under my legs. If I turn on my side, it seems to trigger them if that makes sense.

Kinda weird your primary can't or hasn't helped with this.

But, I have foot cramps. I drink a shite ton of water(my pee is clear and piss often) I do take a potassium supplement 3-4 x's a week. I also make sure I eat potassium, magnesium, copper rich foods. I also drink equate brand Ensure chocolate milk which is mostly for elderly peeps, but it is rich in all kinds of vitamins/minerals. I also drink Emergen-C daily, also high in vitamins.

If I'm pissing alot and it's clear, I'm draining my potassium and other vits with the quickness. I have to replenish in some way.

I still don't get how your primary hasn't advised you on this. Find a better doc.

My 2-cents anyway. I'm not a doc and don't stay at a Holiday Inn.

Edit: I also make smoothies 3-4 times a week. Frozen strawberries, blueberries, banana slices, w/whey, maple syrup, water and/or milk. (you do not want a smoothie too thick, water it down a little) Can find recipes for fruit smoothies online. Good stuff
