Construction of the new LA 1 bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway in West Baton Rouge Parish will drag on up to 10 months longer than planned due to "unexpected settlement" of the structure.

Engineers say the issue concerns the piles under each of the 17 new bridge columns.

"(T)his issue will be mitigated using an alternative soil improvement technique called low-mobility grouting, whereby grout is injected into the ground beneath the piles to compact loose soils," the Department of Transportation and Development said.

quote:

Once both phases are completed, there will be a new southbound bridge that has three 12-foot lanes and 10-foot shoulders, and a new northbound bridge with two 12-foot lanes and 10-foot shoulders and a barrier-separated exit lane for I-10 eastbound.

The project was expected to cost about $58 million . . . . WBRZ News has reached out to DOTD asking whether the situation will affect the price the State pays for the new bridge.

How in God’s name did the country build infrastructure in the 50s and 60s without problems that has lasted decades, but we can’t properly drive some damn pilings today?

It is clear as day from this article that Engineering hasn't yet caught up to Climate Change.

I knew that construction was going way too smoothly. I've actually been impressed with the speed they've built that thing. Maybe this is why.

ALL of the piles are settling before they even loaded it?!

Better buy some more ferries.

We were joking a few years ago about DOTD Civil Engineers on massive bridge projects. It takes around 10 years from start to finish once a site is selected.

What do you do for 10 years? frick off for 9.5 years and then look for a new job the other 6 months?
