Unclassified Deaths by the Coroner. (i.e. homicides that aren't labeled homicides).

Great guess here.

The data is from 2020-2021 so it’s definitely Covid. It’s now listed as “other” because people started to realize that a lot of the “Covid” deaths were bullshite and shouldn’t have been classified as “Covid.”

Edit: During that time pretty much all coronary deaths were listed as Covid and less people were driving (although some of those deaths they attributed to Covid as well).

This report seems to suggest it's "poisoning related," likely carbon monoxide.

ETA: the report talks separately about CO poisoning vs drug overdoses, but the two might have been combined in the primary table.

So maybe it's overdoses plus CO poisoning.

ODs and fentanyl are insane. My Facebook is like a rolling obituary reel of dead townies I went to high school with.

How covid got 100000x more attention than this ill never know.

Both created by the government for two separate reasons

“Poisoning related” includes drug overdoses, which is likely to be the leading cause of death in that age group even outpacing homicides.

The likely reason that “other” is chosen for Louisiana is due to poor and confusing categories when compiling the data.

For instance: having firearm related, homicide, and suicide as three separate causes of death in the same table is nonsense. Homicide and suicides are most commonly “firearm related” and aren’t even causes of death anyway - they’re manners of death.

The largest cause of death in each age group for Louisiana isn’t likely to be different than any of the other bordering states. They all have the same issues with murder, drug use, and car crashes.

It’s also weird how the original graphic lists “fentanyl and other synthetic opioids” as a category, which excludes most other common causes of overdose including heroin and the stimulants.

I lived in Montana for a couple of years. There is great natural beauty of course but otherwise the long winters, lack of sunlight, the bitter cold all are contributing factors to social isolation, drug use and depression and ultimately suicidal thoughts. I imagine social media and drug use has made it infinitely worse.

There was a huge study done a while back that compared like socio-economic and ethnic groups to their foreign cousins on the dimensions of homicide, suicide and gun access across many of our ethnic groups. The results were generally insignificant with some exceptions.

Swedish Americans in Minnesota with a high gun ownership rate had a significantly lower suicide rate compared to their peers in Sweden with a much smaller gun ownership ratio. Homicides were equivalent.

The odd part were the developing and third world people with their foreign cousins with strict gun control. Americans had much lower homicide rates and suicide rates. This is nowhere dramatically more evident in El Paso, Tx and Juarez, Mx. El Paso has a typical homicide rate around 2/100,000 while Juarez is often in the 130/100,000 range even though they are largely cousins divided only by the Rio Grand.

Cultural attitudes, ethnicity and religious differences are usually one of the big the drivers. Look at international suicide rates by countries.

Some of the stats might be affected by greater safety levels in vehicle and children's car seat manufacturing as well as advances in cancer treatment.

That is the first this thing that really popped out to me. That definitely isn’t random.
