If you watch their Unplugged performance, you can see he was really battling. They even said it was their first concert in a long time and I think it might have been their last time together before he died.

Btw, their Unplugged had to be top 3 all time. Maybe after Clapton and Nirvana..? I would love to see Unplugged come back, probably on another network and just 5-6 shows a year so it isn't overdone..

Layne had HIV and was committed to not die from AIDS. He succeeded.

Unplugged capped off 2 or 3 years of sporadic performances and canceled tours because Staley was already in bad shape. You can hear that Staley has already begun losing his teeth in that recording. The voice is still there, but it's apparent the toll the drug addiction he's singing about has taken on him. At one point, he starts getting antsy because he needs a fix and he starts going on about time using some bullshite transparent code. I think Cantrell tells him to calm down and that they'll finish in plenty of time for him to get to his colonic. Staley was in bad shape during that recording and they did like 4 or 5 shows after it and that was it for AiC until the reformation with the new singer.

Layne Staley died 6 years after that Unplugged performance. Those demons fueled the amazing lyrics Staley wrote, but they made him suffer horrifically a long time for it.

welcome to 16 years ago. Wrote a paper on him my senior year in college in psychology. He was such an interesting person. I was obsessed with him during the paper.

What a sad way to go. His primary reason for turning to drugs and anger were his parents divorce.

All of this no doubt. But his singing is haunting. I wore out that tape and then CD of that show. That version of "down in a hole" and a few others are just awesome, no doubt better than the original recordings..

Agreed. The Unplugged stuff is just better. I think everyone on stage kind of knew that Layne could go at any time and the moments he was lucid enough to do a show were few and far between, so they all left everything out there knowing they were on borrowed time with that lineup. With the instruments stripped down because of the format, Staley and Cantrell's voices stand out even more than usual and the pain, sadness, regret, anger, etc. in Staley's voice when he sang about the addiction that was killing him stands out starkly for everyone to hear and it makes that recording tragically magical.

My pain is self-chosen
At least, so the prophet says
I could either burn
Or cut off my pride and buy some time
A head full of lies is the weight, tied to my waist

The river of deceit pulls down, oh oh
The only direction we flow is down

Staley knew he was doomed and writes the lyrics for this amazing, beautiful, "hard to listen to once you actually LISTEN to it" song about it. Above and Mad Season are CRIMINALLY underrated. All four members of the band were junkies and they wrote some unflinching songs about HEAVY subject matter that would ultimately kill two of them.

When he was found his CD player was still playing the U2 song “In a little while” on repeat. Really good chance that he decided to commit suicide and just kept injecting heroin into himself until he died

My bad: it was Joey Ramone who had in a little while playing on repeat when he died. I always think it was Staley. Probably because it was around the same time

I don't think there is a doubt about this. But the Foo Fighters success always kind of gets lumped in with Nirvana, which boosts their legend. Plus Nirvana was the first major band of the genre, which makes them more memorable. AIC had way better music and many more hits. Just never as popular..

Of the 4 major grunge bands, I'd actually put Nirvana 3rd..

1. AIC
2. Pearl Jam
3. Nirvana
4. Soundgarden
