I bought a iPhone 6 from straight talk Black Friday for $120. I bought it because my iPhone 5 that was 4-5 years old needed a new battery. My wife’s Nexus bricked after 18 months. I bought it with my credit card so visa extended the warranty and gave me a full refund. I used that money and bought her a 6s plus. She loves it.
From my personal experience, iPhones just work.

Expect a cell phone, any cell phone, to be worth anything after 3-4 years. It is technology. It changes fast.
there's a difference between technology changing and a company intentionally slowing down their older models to push ignorant consumers into buying their new $1000 version.
of course it is the customers fault for being ignorant, but it is absolutely awful customer service.
i realized about 2-3 years ago that buying the latest and greatest cell phone is a terrible investment, if you just wait til the new version comes out 2nd newest model drops about 60% in price.
i just picked up a new phone for $300 that has a snapdragon 820, 4GB RAM, a removeable battery, infrared (for controlling tv), usb C, and a screen that is bigger than an iphone 8 plus. i wont be replacing it for a while unless something else comes out with a removeable battery and price drops to ~$350 with better specs in the next few years

They should stop pushing software updates for old phones. If an old phone hardware has old phone software, its good if maintained well.
Thier motive is completely different.

Why not allow changeable batteries? Of course even samsung did away with them.

I think the issue then becomes vulnerabilities that aren't patched after a while.

Get an LG phone. When the battery wears out you can replace it yourself easy peasy.

You can replace iPhone batteries yourself in about 10 minutes.
I chose not to because the 6 was such a good deal.

Do you think your computer from 10 years ago can run new operating systems?
Actually they can. Just gonna be slower.

Technology has essentially stopped evolving in the computer market
Computers and phones are no different now.
Processors continually get faster and more efficient, just like phones.
Screens continue to to get better just like phones.
We are rapidly moving from HDD to SSD and now PCIE SSDs.

baby steps. In the mid 90s you still had first get pentium processors on the market, in the next 10 years processor speeds nearly doubled each year. The past ten years, processors have been fine tuned, not doubled. Memory has been catching up to help out, graphics cards have advanced by putting better processors into them with better ram. Screen continue to get better but in baby steps, years between advancements.
My statement may make you laugh because you don't know how fast computers and the internet evolved.

let's be honest. how many people are going to walk around with 2 year old phones? Do you think your computer from 10 years ago can run new operating systems?
Bought this computer in 2008, it is running Windows 10.

You're free to skip the class action and sue them yourself for that $600 phone you bought because they misled you

Why can’t we have the option of taking a risk on our batteries vs speed?

perhaps. a fine for consumer fraud would be more productive.

Apple has hundreds of billions in cash on hand. A fine won't do shite to them.
Dissolve the fricking company and execute the executives. Push it to all iPhones as a warning. Otherwise, they'll just swat at the annoyance and then move on to the next way to frick everyone over.

Has no one heard of planned obsolescence?

Not everyone wants to finance a fricking phone in perpetuity. I'd keep my phone forever if it continues to work like it did the day I got it, and Apple is completely capable of making that happen.
I'd respect them more if they charged $2000 up front to buy it and never deliberately turned it into an obsolete piece of shite.
