Really depends on your definition of "worked." If you mean we have achieved the highest incarceration rates in the world and still have rampant crime and innocent people rotting in jail...it is working great.

It's bullshite that for me to vote they force me to take off work and listen to these criminals during jury duty when there are people that sit on welfare all day and have the same right to vote

I think that went out the window a long time ago when plea deals were introduced.

There are very few innocent people in jail. Most of those guys have a rap sheet a mile long and it's no great leap of logic that they killed someone too. The only people in jail that are innocent are people that shot jodys because that shouldn't be a crime

so you think the proof beyond a reasonable doubt standard is the reason we still have rampant crime?

Show me something better, and I'll change my mind.

We have the highest incarceration work because we have the most freedoms.

Crime isn't rampant unless you consider the neighborhoods where the criminals live and then yes, it is rampant.

If you empty all the jails then we'd have no innocents 'rotting in jail". That would solve the problem, right?

Even if they didn't murder that specific person or steal that specific car they're most likely guilty of something else that the cops haven't caught them for

No. Not what I am saying at all. I am saying that making it easier to convict someone in LA than 48 other states hasn't exactly solved the woes everyone is lamenting in this thread.

I have experience with jury trials in criminal and civil court, but none serving as a juror.
So you're a defense lawyer?

However, requiring unanimous agreement among jurors, in such a diverse demographic, is a dangerous precedent.

that's the point

and a 11-1 doesn't mean acquittal. it just means a hung jury and the Defendant still faces prosecution

It is astonishing that a state would even think about incarcerating someone for the rest of his or her life when 2 jurors disagreed with the verdict.

What if they only disagree because they have something in common?

Neither criminal defense attorneys or prosecutors bill by the hour.

And do you believe that's because people are being thrown in jail for no reason or that they are committing crimes?d

So a defense attorney who has to go through 2 or 3 retrials only charges the defendant to represent him for one trial??

typically it's just handled by salaried attorneys (DAs and PDOs) and the cost doesn't increase. they're drawing salaries regardless
