It is astonishing that a state would even think about incarcerating someone for the rest of his or her life when 2 jurors disagreed with the verdict.
All capital crimes in Louisiana, as in all those crimes that have the death penalty or life in prison as a sentence, currently require a unanimous jury verdict to convict.

Law proposed to require unanimous decision for felonies
IMO that would be a disaster in Louisiana.

I had no idea. You’d think this would incentivize criminals to leave the state for their crimes

It's done to highlight the utter ridiculousness of the 10/12 system. 16.67% of the jury disagrees with the majority verdict, and you let it stand. How isn't that reasonable doubt?
You do realize that in cases like OJ's that you cited earlier, the 10/12 system would have had zero impact on the case's outcome. He was acquitted, there wasn't a hung jury. The 10/12 system, by its very nature, probably results in more innocent men being wrongly convicted.

So you are saying that an individual cannot be sent to prison for the rest of their life off a 10-2 verdict?
A 60 year prison sentence is often a "life sentence" for practical purposes.

So the guy who got 20 or 30 years for a non-capital crime when 2 people on his jury voted not guilty are just supposed to cheer about the justice system in LA because of this? Who's the dumb arse?

It has been proven that most of the jurors, who were black, voted against conviction strictly because OJ was black and famous. They didn't want another black man in prison. This was just after the race riots in the L.A. area.
Point being, as has been mentioned many times throughout this thread, that people will vote one way or the other based on skin color alone, white or black. So in requiring a unanimous decision on ALL felony cases, I would wager we would see an increase in violent felons in the community.

I served on a jury for a murder trail several years back. One juror voted not guilty even after watching a video of the confession. His reasoning for the not guilty vote was that the one who actually set up the entire thing got immunity for testifying for prosecution.
This is a good example of why it needs to stay the way it is now.

Awesome. So let's find the guy not guilty when the overwhelming majority of jurors found them guilty.
This is literally letting the minority opinion make decisions in the courtroom. This is absurd.

Great. All you need to do now is bribe one juror and your guy goes free!
So now all the defense attorney has to do is play the race card to the one A-A on the jury and the accused goes free. Woo hoo!

I agree that this is a bad idea.

As they should since you're sending then to death.

To be honest, you're probably right. My issue is where do we draw the line. Is 7-5 ok because it's a majority? And a 10-2 hung jury in favor of conviction in other states doesn't prevent re-trying the Defendant.

Which is exactly why the white folks created this 10/12 scheme. To completely silence any influence of blacks on a jury. That was the purpose, and you say that is just fine.

Actually, only cases in which the death penalty is a potential sentence require a unanimous verdict
all others are 10-2
Crimes that you can get life in prison if found guilty by a 10-2 verdict:
Second Degree Murder
Aggravated Rape
Aggravated Kidnapping
And while you need a unanimous verdict of First Degree Murder to move onto the death penalty phase, if only 10 people find the defendant guilty, he will still be sentenced to life, there is just no sentencing phase

If they're voting not guilty because of skin color, their influence should be silenced.

I bet many of you are the same guys screaming about the constitution and your "rights" as you conveniently ignore the parts you don't like.

I wouldn't go as far as to say a simple majority. I'd say just leave it be as it currently stands.
