LaToya’s order has a loophole that most businesses can invoke.
Posted by Slippy on 3/21/20 at 9:17 am148
Our firm has a 10am conference call to discuss what it all means, and whether we have to “close,” whatever that means. But here is the key provision:
Isn’t this what most people are doing already? We have most of our people working from home. Office manager is going in and scanning everyone’s mail to them. A few of the dinosaurs who have trouble with basic technology can just go in if they want. It’s not like the police are going to come pull them out.
Yeah, this is bad for the hospitality industry. But for everyone else it’s something between a huge inconvenience and a nothingburger.

That’s why I hate that she just had to hold another fricking press conference to say nothing but the same shite. We’re already doing everything that she yelled about yesterday. All that did was make more people run out and panic buy.

You realize there’s a lot of businesses out there between hospitality and office employees right? I agree with you in general, I’m simply saying lots of businesses are not easy to run by having office staff at home and laborers around the business/ office.
Many businesses are not doing that. Several of the big firms in the CBD have sent emails saying you'd better be here, including to people like paralegals and staff that would presumably be working remotely to empty the cubicles and shared space.
Go back and watch the press conference. Skip over her talk to the part where she takes questions.
FIRST question was how or if she could legally enforce this. Her response was that they hoped people would “do the right thing” and that they would try to use city permitting and licensing to force businesses to do it. In other words, it can’t be legally enforced.
Then two questions later a reporter asked her to name some non-critical businesses that would be subject to her order. Her response, I couldn’t believe this, was “barber shops, beauty salons, nail salons” and then she mumbled something about how the Order spells it out.
Hell, the very start of the presser was her saying that the Order (but I think she called it a Guidance Document or some such BS) draws its authority from the Order she signed last week. So her Order draws authority from another Order? It’s all smoke and mirrors. There is ZERO chance I would base any business decisions off of what she is saying.

There’s a huge gap you’re talking about here though. You’re not thinking about the little local trophy shops or sign shop type places. There’s a ton of businesses between hospitality and the businesses that can afford to cut back, work from home and/or close up for an extended period of time. Think of all of those stores down Magazine and Royal. Can they sustain months of little to no customers?
The scale of the fallout from the government shutting everything down is tough to pin down right now. There’s going to be a shitload of money lost.

The thing of it is, those little retail stores never have more than a few customers in them at a time. Relatively speaking, there is little to no danger there. You know what’s dangerous? Several hundred people in a grocery or Sam’s Club. But the big stores are the very ones exempt from this order. It’s almost as if the Mayors Office is so desperate to be seen “doing something” that they didn’t think this through. You would hope there would be someone in charge saying “hold on for a minute, let’s talk about this.”

This time of year is usually huge for those businesses with Mardi Gras then St. Patrick’s Day, Spring Breaks, Festival Season, etc. The shut down during this time is awful for them.
And I agree about the grocery stores. I just got back from one and it’s like people think the inside of the store offers some type of immunity.

Pretty weak order. Notice how differentiates between gatherings and establishments that must cease operations? Makes no sense.
Most people in your world equates to 20% in the real world.
This is going to decimate the vast majority of businesses and employees.
Bu I guess since it doesn't inconvenience you it's a nothing burger sure.

That's what I'm saying. Nothing has changed as far as NOPD's responsibilities, with the exception of maybe fewer auto accidents to cover.
Arrests have actually ticked up a bit, with around 30 for the daily first appearances.
The jail population is way down because the freedom fund is irresponsibly posting bail for people whom they don't know and thus can't act as a surety for.

I am sure once the Partners of the firm find out who you are through this post will have you working 80 hrs a week! That is if you don't turn into a pussy and quit! But by reading your post you seem to be one of those people that knows everything and is a big PUSSY

I believe “professional services” are exempt, at least per the article I read. I have not seen the actual order.
