I'm starting to get concerned with the number of times I'm agreeing with her.

This may or may not be a good project. This may or may not be a worthy use of money.

But the scant details and complexity of this project make me think this needs a lot more known about it before everyone signs off on it.

Also... Joe Jaeger is involved in this. If that name sounds familiar, it is because he was involved in shooting down the Harrah's hotel expansion.

because the Convention and Tourism Center has been fudging the number of visitors to keep up their huge budget.

There was a huge story on this a few months ago

Does Omni want it built for free too

quote:

The $557.5 million proposal for an Omni-branded hotel calls for 40 years of hotel and sales tax rebates, a 100 percent property tax exemption and a lease on Convention Center-owned land that would be provided at no charge, according to BGR. The nonprofit also estimated that when the $41 million contribution is added to the property tax exemption and the free land lease, the subsidy is worth $738.8 million over 40 years.

Here is the story
quote:

Earlier this month, a report from the University of New Orleans found a record 10.98 million people visited the city in 2017. Last week, the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau came out with its own estimate that blew that one out of the water, pegging total visitors at 17.74 million. What gives?

The short answer is that the numbers may reflect different methods of finding and counting tourists. Dig deeper and the gap reveals just how tough of a job that can be -- and how competition in the tourism industry can influence the number we land on as much as methodology.

Here is the background. Up to this year, the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau and the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corp. had worked with the University of New Orleans Hospitality Research Center to count total tourism traffic to the city. The UNO report relies on a mix of outside data and in-person surveys throughout the year to figure out how many people were visiting.

Not a LaToya fan and think she’ll end up being a disaster... but I agree, she’s doing some good things. A lot of small improvements happening in the city. Until we get this freaking crime rate down though, nothing is going to matter.

Why? It seems like she has been doing a pretty good job so far. Are you afraid of agreeing with a black woman or something?

What are some examples? I'm not saying you're wrong, just curious to know what you're referencing.

Why do you have to bring race into this? We were going to end up with a black female as mayor either way...didnt matter who won the runoff

It's a war for conventions, everyone is trying to up each other.

People don't realize, large conventions are a gold mine to the city hosting.

I’ve posted a few times that I think LaToya is going to do a decent job here. I know this board isn’t a fan of Landrieu to begin with, but I think it’s really understated the mess she inherited from Mitch. I’m surprised she hasn’t gone off on Landrieu yet.

What has she done that you seem to consider a pretty good job?

No, I'm afraid of agreeing with a SJW Democrat.

But she's not acting like a SJW Democrat in a lot of ways. In some, she is.

It's a 1200 room HQ hotel. For the really large conventions, it's just another hotel. Where this would be helpful is in the 1000-2000 person conventions. Which would be good, don't get me wrong.

But the convention center is going to be on the hook for the bonds that build this. Omni is going to "own" the hotel and get most of the profits from it.

I'm struggling to figure out what skin in the game Omni has.

If the convention center wants to own a hotel, then let them build it and let Omni manage it for a fee.

She's not defending Landrieu in anything he was involved with. They had an article last week that she made it a point to expose how Landrieu misused government funding for projects and diverted funds. She may be some radical SJW but so far she has not acted as such as it relates to action being taken. I've agreed with most of what she's done, but not always what she has said.

"On top of that, there is a call to waive sales and occupancy taxes worth hundreds of millions of dollars over the life of the hotel. That's money our citizens cannot afford to do without."

Nah. She means money for the city to spend... maybe hire some more police officers. Maybe do their affordable housing BS. Maybe fix some streets or potholes, etc.

Now, would the money actually go for these things? Good question.

It is quite possible that despite my agreeing with her, she has very different uses for the money than I would have. I also don't believe the govt should be getting into bed with a private company to this extent.

If the conv center wants to have a hotel, they should build a hotel, keep the profits, and hire Omni (and pay them) to run it.

It is obscene that they conv center would be responsible for the bonds to build, but not actually own it.

Those are related. Harrah's agreed to expand, but only if they got the extension. Why should they build hotel for a casino when they could lose casino license in a few years?

It's scummy AF that he didn't disclose his obvious competing interest.

It's also hysterical that he thought the state should negotiate / do bids for the extension, but yet this is basically a no bid deal for this hotel. And what he is asking for is significantly more than Harrah's did.

then I would expect my property taxes to go down...instead of quadrupling over the past 10 years

but he never came out against the Hotel per se...he was vocal against the bill that extended the license.

I see what you're saying though..now we know why he was against the bill that extended the license.
