It is how you end up with the progressive wing of US politics dismissing things like the Azov Battalion and the severe corruption of Ukraine, which permits them to openly support funding and weaponizing these groups.

It is “freedom fries” all over again.

We are entering into the third week of war in Eastern Europe. The Russians steamroller continues to build pressure if not momentum. The Russian siege of Mariupol grows desperate with only marginal regard for preventing civilian casualties. It is completely surrounded with limited access to water. Without conquering Mariupol, the Russians cannot transfer their forces towards taking the Dnieper crossings and enveloping the Ukrainian field army in the Donbas. So the Ukrainians just hold.

The big news is the Russians accusing the United States of funding a biological weapons program in the Ukraine, including the use of using infected birds as offensive disease vectors. There is considerable concern that the Russians would use this as an excuse to use chemical or even biological weapons. The use of chemical weapons is never far from the Russian operational doctrine. Biological weapons are something else entirely. But neither are war winning weapons. They only amplify the human price of victory, and break taboos of modern human suffering.

The Siege of Mariupol is a harbinger of what may be to come as Vladimir Putin may choose to 'double down' on his cold gamble. He can't afford to lose. He's got to win to stay in power. Barring that, we've got a chance at a palace coup. I envision something like the Grand Fascist Council's ousting of Mussolini. But in 2-3 months it will be too late to save Russia from an economic dark age as financial and commercial channels atrophy intractably. Russia will be thrust back economically in time to 1991, perhaps even worse.

Business remains good for the resistance. Russian ineptness continues. Their offensive has slowed to either a crawl, or spurious and isolated advances. This war is already grinding down into one of attrition. As long as the Russians can continue to feed the beast, though, they can still win the conventional war with only time. But having seen demonstrations in streets occupied by the Russians must assure even Putin that he cannot hold Ukraine. So the resistance continues.
