Three rescuers killed, nine injured during emergency response in Kyiv following Russian attack

06.06.2025 09:59

Three rescuers from Ukraine's State Emergency Service were killed and nine others injured while responding to the aftermath of Russian strikes on Kyiv.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko announced this on Telegram, according to Ukrinform.

"Last night, missiles and drones deliberately targeted civilian and critical infrastructure. Emergency services — SES and police — responded to every call for help. Sadly, we have suffered more losses in the Interior Ministry family," Klymenko said.

According to him, three SES rescuers were killed in Kyiv while carrying out their duties under fire, risking their lives to help others. Nine more emergency workers were wounded — some seriously — and doctors are fighting to save them.

Additionally, five rescuers were injured while extinguishing a fire in the Ternopil region. All are receiving medical care.

"A deep bow to our fallen heroes — unarmed, courageous, loyal to their oath, and devoted to their life-saving mission. Wishing a swift recovery to the injured," Klymenko added.

Fires, wrecked homes and scorched cars: Reuters shows images of Russia’s overnight strike on Kyiv

June 6, 2025, 02:10 AM PhotoStory

Russia launched a combined missile and drone attack on Kyiv overnight on June 6, with debris from downed weapons falling across six city districts: Darnytskyi, Desnianskyi, Holosiivskyi, Solomianskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, and Sviatoshynskyi.

Reuters published a photo report capturing the destruction caused by the strikes.

The air raid alert in the capital lasted four hours — from 12:22 a.m. to 4:52 a.m.

Seeing that German Chancellor Merz just visited the White House, let's meet two very influencial, very opposed persons in German politics today - the new German MoD State Secretary for Armaments Jens Plötner and security hawk and parliamentary sentinel Roderich Kiesewetter.

First, Plötner -

quote:

Marie Strack-Zimmermann (@MAStrackZi ) hits the nail on the head: Having Pistorius appoint Jens Plötner as State Secretary for Armaments in the German MoD is one of the most insidious moves by the SPD elite in the new coalition - deliberately feeding the appeasniks and debilitatingly biased Moscovites.

Plötner is one of the architects & the poster child for Germany's failed old Russia policy - something @yarotrof and I noted, and @RKiesewetter confirmed in our detailed discussions. Here's his damning record:

1.) THE SMOKING GUN QUOTE
June 20, 2022 - Just DAYS after visiting war-torn Ukraine with Scholz, Plötner argued:
"You can fill many newspaper pages with 20 Marders, but there are fewer articles about what our relationship with Russia will be like in the future."
Even witnessing Russian war crimes firsthand in Irpin couldn't shake his Moscow-first mentality.

2.) WEAPONS DELAY ARCHITECT
The Leopard 2 Scandal: Plötner was on daily calls with Jake Sullivan throughout 2022, both agreeing Ukraine needed tanks. BUT Plötner insisted Germany wouldn't move unless the US sent tanks first.
Result? Months of critical delays while Ukrainians died. Sullivan finally "read him the riot act" in a furious call.

3.) THE TAURUS OBSTRUCTION
Sources in Berlin confirm Plötner is "someone who reinforces Scholz's rejecting stance" on Taurus cruise missiles. These precision weapons could cripple Russian logistics and command centers.
Plötner's counsel: Deny Ukraine the tools for victory to preserve "future relations" with Putin's regime.

4.) THE MINSK DELUSION
As Steinmeier's chief of staff (2014-2017), Plötner co-architected the failed Minsk Agreements - the diplomatic framework Putin exploited to prepare for full invasion.
Even AFTER February 2022 exposed Minsk as a complete sham, Plötner defends it as preventing "worse outcomes." Delusional.

5.) THE UKRAINE DISMISSAL
When asked about Ukraine's EU candidacy, Plötner cold-bloodedly responded:
'Just because you're attacked doesn't automatically make you a better rule of law state.'
This while Ukraine fights for European values against genocidal aggression. The moral bankruptcy is staggering.

6.) INTERNATIONAL OUTRAGE
General Ben Hodges @general_ben
(former US Army Europe commander): Scholz's approach influenced by advisers like Plötner represents "moral bankruptcy and strategic failure" - Germany is "losing the moral authority earned over 75 years."
General Philip Breedlove @PMBreedlove
(former NATO Supreme Commander): The "prevent escalation" mindset championed by Plötner "merely increases the probability we'll face danger later on less favorable grounds."

7.) UKRAINIAN CONDEMNATION
Andrij Melnyk @MelnykAndrij
(former Ukrainian Ambassador): Explicitly named Plötner as part of Steinmeier's "spider web" of Russia-linked insiders whose advice is compromised by "years of coziness with the Kremlin."

8.) GERMAN SECURITY EXPERTS ALARMED
Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann: Plötner's thinking "has brought us into this terrible situation" - surely "this is not the time to think about Russia, but to help Ukraine."
Roderich Kiesewetter @RKiesewetter
: Denounced the SPD's "Russia-friendly, Ukraine-sacrificing stance" enabled by advisers like Plötner.

9.) THE AMERICAN PARALLEL
Plötner is Germany's version of #JakeSullivan plus #SamuelCharap - the latter being the RAND Corporation analyst whom experts & friends including @PeterBDoran
@ChuckPfarrer
@CurtainSilicon
@RajanMenon
@WarintheFuture
over many years have criticised as the ever-appeasing, ever-Russian-reset-driven analyst who never served but lectures on geopolitical, security & military strategy.

Like Charap, Plötner:
- Never served in combat leadership
- Prioritizes "avoiding escalation" over victory
- Consistently wrong about Putin's intentions
- Enables aggression through accommodation

10.) THE DANGER NOW
Plötner now controls German defense procurement and armaments cooperation - precisely where his accommodation mindset can most damage:

- Procurement reform & accelerated purchasing
- Ukrainian weapons deliveries & related Bundeswehr backfilling
- NATO interoperability
- Transatlantic defense cooperation
- Innovation strategy development & execution in a geometrically accelerating global adaption war

11.) BOTTOM LINE
This appointment rewards failure and institutionalizes the exact mindset that enabled Putin's aggression. While Ukraine bleeds, Germany elevates officials who prioritize future Russian relations over present Ukrainian survival.
As @PMBreedlove
warned: 'Each day we delay providing Ukraine the weapons it needs to win, we merely increase the probability we'll face that danger later on less favorable grounds.'

Plötner embodies this bias & strategic naïveté perfectly.

12.) THE PATTERN
The SPD continues promoting the same Russlandversteher ["Russia-Empathizer"] cadres responsible for:

- Nord Stream 2 delusion
- Minsk Agreements failure
- "Wandel durch Handel" bankruptcy
- Strategic dependence on Putin's regime

Meanwhile, true security experts like @RKiesewetter
are sidelined from oversight roles which @_FriedrichMerz
@bundeskanzler
could have arranged for by setting the guidelines of policy as is his right and role as chancellor, even to the point of demanding national security critical appointments such this to be in line with his policy.
The unchallenged message of Pistorius and his SPD is clear: Accommodate Moscow, get promoted. Challenge Putin, get marginalized.

13.) FINAL THOUGHT

As I noted in my discussions with @yarotrof
, Plötner represents the horseshoe nadir - sufficient intelligence to be dangerous but lacklustre understanding of defense, national security, or geopolitics.
@_FriedrichMerz
has the aforementioned authority to set policy guidelines. Time to show Pistorius what's required:
No more Russlandversteher in critical defense roles.
Germany's credibility - and Ukraine's survival - depends on it.

Secondly, Kiesewetter -

quote:

The clash about to define German defence & security politics Meet Roderich Kiesewetter @RKiesewetter - the security hawk and parliamentary sentinel whose uncompromising principles are colliding with party unity politics.

Two visions of the CDU's & Germany's future collide. Can they be reconciled? In view of Plötner's appointment at MoD will @bundeskanzler reintegrate him into a strong CDU/CSU phalanx in order to defeat the threats from adversaries, enemies and threats, both foreign & domestic?

1/ THE SOLDIER-STATESMAN - 30 years Bundeswehr service - NATO HQ Brussels & SHAPE executive officer - Heusinger Prize winner (best German graduate) - Battalion commander, multiple deployments - Real expertise in an age of political amateurs

2 UKRAINE: THE MOMENT OF TRUTH When Putin invaded Ukraine, Kiesewetter immediately & consistently called for:

Heavy weapons deliveries (Feb 2022)
Taurus missiles for Ukraine (Mar 2023)
"Der Krieg muss nach Russland getragen werden" ["The war must be carried to Russia"]

Merz prioritised party consensus and public opinion management. Two different leadership philosophies.

3 THE POLITICAL CONSEQUENCE Kiesewetter's uncompromising stance created tensions:

- Personal discussions with Merz (summer 2024)
- Removal from intelligence oversight committee
- Different vision clashing with party management Media prominence vs internal discipline. His approach: expertise over consensus. Merz's: unity over individual positions.

4 DEMOCRATIC PRINCIPLE VS PARTY STRATEGY Jan 2025: Merz backed migration law that AfD would also support. Kiesewetter refused: "The CDU must be crystal clear that we will not allow ourselves to be associated with those who undermine our democratic order." Merz: Focus on legislative outcomes Kiesewetter: Focus on value stance & democratic optics

5 TWO LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHIES Merz' integration approach (includes Spahn, Kretschmer, Wüst, Günther):

- Pragmatic consensus-building
- Managing diverse party factions to get back to power
- Public opinion sensitivity
- Legislative effectiveness focus

Kiesewetter-Röttgen hawkish approach:

- Principle-driven positions
- Security expertise priority
- Moral clarity emphasis
- Alliance solidarity first

Despite the overlap between them, the tension remains.

6 MEDIA RECOGNITION Even across party lines, German media sees the truth:

Der Spiegel (deep red [SPD] since foundation, greenish): "The CDU's conscience on security"

Die Welt (Springer's populist conservative): "Silencing Kiesewetter is strategic mistake"

taz (the hard red daily): "A voice of principle in a party adrift"

ARD/ZDF (étatiste social democratic-green centrist): "Reflects deeper CDU identity struggle"

F.A.Z (centre-right/conservative): 'Der Oberst [Colonel] im Bundestag'

7 THE DEEPER END Behind the scenes, concerning networks emerge:

Spahn-Grenell "bridge-building" relationships
Lynch-Nord Stream 2 buyout attempts
Revival of Moscow-Wingas energy connections
Cross-party Russian influence operations
Kiesewetter threatens these cozy arrangements.

8 THE FUNDAMENTAL DISAGREEMENT Kiesewetter: "Appeasement toward autocrats has cost Germany enough. We need clarity, not policy swings."
Röttgen: "The CDU must return to a foreign policy of values—not constant balancing."
Merz: "We must avoid going it alone and bring the population along."

Three quotes. Two irreconcilable approaches to power and principle.

9 WHAT'S REALLY AT STAKE This clash represents fundamental questions:
- Expertise-driven vs consensus-driven foreign policy
- Hawkish clarity vs pragmatic coalition management
- Individual principle vs party discipline
- Security specialist insight vs perceived broader political strategy

10 THE CURRENT TENSION Kiesewetter retains his role as foreign affairs spokesperson (more prominent than the intelligence role). He still has a platform.

In February 2025 on F.A.Z.'s podcast he explicitly warned about hybrid warfare threats – "Russland befindet sich nicht mehr nur im Informationskrieg, sondern greift in einer Vorstufe an" (Russia is no longer just engaged in information warfare but is attacking in a preliminary stage).

But the question remains: Can principled hawks coexist with consensus builders? In view of the threats to Europe and Germany, can they afford not to?

Two legitimate approaches to politics are colliding within the CDU, but they must be resolved within the summer to make this coalition government effective under existential time pressure for Europe & Germany.

11 WHY THIS MATTERS TO YOU If principled voices like Kiesewetter are silenced: - Ukraine loses a crucial advocate - German democracy weakens - Russian influence networks strengthen - Transatlantic alliance suffers Authoritarian appeasement becomes norm This affects ALL of us.

12 THE CHOICE FACING THE CDU/CSU Germany's largest party and leader of the new government must decide:

- Security expertise vs broader coalition appeal
- Hawkish foreign policy vs public opinion management
- Individual principled voices vs unified party messaging
- Kiesewetter's clarity vs Merz's integration approach

Both have political logic. The outcome shapes Germany's future role.

13 FINAL THOUGHT: In an era requiring both security expertise and political coalition-building, Roderich Kiesewetter represents the uncompromising voice of strategic clarity. Whether that voice can coexist with party management imperatives will define the CDU's future approach to foreign policy. END

This is based on extensive research into CDU/CSU internal dynamics and the systematic marginalisation of principled voices in German politics. The problem with a lot of the types of European politicians often liked by people who seemingly support unlimited aid for Ukraine for an unlimited time frame is that even if they are stronger on European security, they often also support toxic domestic policies that will ultimately make their own countries weaker in the long term. Unfettered migration of people who have no desire to assimilate whatsoever and are fairly often a drain on the country they come to will ultimately erode your own national security and as a result the security of Europe as a whole.

This guy seems more nuanced on the immigration topic, which is refreshing. But sometimes the solution is simply "This thing is bad for us and we need to stop".

Trump isn’t letting the war continue. It’s continuing because Russia wants it to continue and Ukraine doesn’t want to accept Russia’s terms which amount to surrendering.

Trump put himself between a rock and a hard place when he trusted Putin to negotiate a fair peace. Now he is trying to get out.

Drones struck a Russian military plant in Michurinsk, Tambov Oblast, in the early hours of June 6, according to media outlets in Russia. Attacks were also reported in Russia's Saratov, Moscow, Tula, Belgorod, and Kaluga oblasts.

The JSC Progress Plant in the city of Michurinsk in Tambov Oblast came under fire overnight, Russian Telegram news channels reported, citing local residents. A drone allegedly hit the plant's workshop, causing a fire. Russian officials have not yet commented on the attack.

The JSC Progress Plant produces high-tech aviation and missile control systems, along with equipment for gas and oil pipelines. The plant was reportedly hit in a previous attack in December 2024.

On the same night, Russian outlets also reported that an oil refinery in Saratov Oblast came under attack. The Kristal Plant, which supplies fuel to the Engels-2 military airfield, was engulfed in flames after a drone strike. Ukraine has targeted the facility in past attacks.
