27 ex-White House foreign policy experts, diplomats and military commanders urge Biden to create a 'limited' no-fly zone over Ukraine to protect civilian escape routes - despite fears it will spark WWIII

First I’m reading about then No fly zone. Has Biden commented on it yet directly?

I’d love to know the thought process behind this. Why do we have to be the middle man?

My hunch, this is being organized by the US, not by Poland, and we are facilitating in order to score political points at home. Poland gets a free air force upgrade and they can hide behind NATO protection. It's a win/win for them.

Ukraine gets jets they know how to operate. No brainer for them.

Yes, that's to put the attention on us rather than the border countries. Goes along with the announced no-fly zone.

Frankly, I'm not a fan.

Me either.

And we were doing so good up to this point. Putting out the Intel, sending Javelins and Stingers, saying no to a no-fly zone. Then it's a complete reversal today if the Poland jet swap and "limited no-fly zone are true.

It just doesn't make sense to me.

not sure a no fly zone would do any good. the area is huge and most of the damage is actually being done by artillery and cruise missiles.

plus a no fly zone would apply to the Ukrainian military also. that includes the turkish drones they are using.

I just wish officials would stop admitting escalation is off the table. Even though it is...dont be a bunch of vaginas and tell the world youre scared of putin.

If NATO wanted to do something under the guise of humanitarianism but assist the Ukraine military they would set up a 75 km buffer zone east of the Polish border.

Protects the polish border and supply lines to support the war. It would also create space for refugee camps so they dont flood other European nations.

Right, as usual it’s a win win for everyone but the American people.

This is likely what that previous tweet mentioned was saying. Likely in response to those 29 people urging to establish one.

Exactly. Are they just hiding behind the US to do it? I want no part of this exchange if I’m the US.

Depends on what the established precedent is. Have the US and Russia both supplied jets to the opponents of people the other one is fighting in the past? Does Russia do it? If so, then go ahead and do it. If not, don't do it.

Perhaps I am interpreting it wrong, but that says to me the US is still not going forward with a no fly zone, no matter who is suggesting it

Ah, so no-fly zone isn't happening. Good. I thought they were really losing their minds today.

We’ve all heard about Hillary’s 17 intelligence agencies, 27 policy experts etc…

Maybe they’re in cahoots with the WH and the letter is just softening the discussion and feeling Russia out? I’m sure they’re considering it with the MiG news

I read it as we’re still not doing any part of a no-fly zone.

With the Poland jet swap I wonder if Polish pilots were already training on the F-35, or do we have to be Poland’s Air Force for a while until they get up to speed. Per one article Polish F-35 training wasn’t supposed to begin until 2024.

I agree. NFZ would be pretty drastic but unless we're gonna be trucking the Polish migs into Ukraine seems like flying them in from a NATO country would likely be seen as pretty much the same by putin.

I believe that's right, the WH keeps using "escalation/escalatory" as a pejorative (appropriately and accurately IMO), so I think they're just continuing to put the no fly zone ideas if the column of things they can't and won't do.

The top pic looks like some AT-4 anti-tank missiles all bagged up. Basically just a simpler, unguided missile unlike the Javelin which has some guidance capability.

I'm getting news from it but it feels like governments are making propositions via social media, which seems lazy.

What is this saying exactly? That the US is considering taking that step? WTF are we doing today?

It's difficult to tell exactly, but the US has refused to impose a no fly zone for the reason that it would escalate the conflict. I read this as a repeat of the US reasons for not doing it.

I read it the same.

That is not an official announcement of a limited no-fly zone, and that announcement probably wouldn't reported first by a Dubai news outlet.
