Putin's spokesman says US suspension of military aid to Ukraine is "best contribution to peace"
Iryna Balachuk — Tuesday, 4 March 2025, 11:58
The Kremlin has commented on media reports that US military aid to Ukraine has been suspended, calling it the "best contribution" to the supposedly "peaceful" settlement of the Russo-Ukrainian war.
Source: Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov at a briefing, as reported by RIA Novosti, a Kremlin-aligned Russian news outlet
Quote from Peskov: "If the United States ceases to be [the main supplier of military aid to Ukraine – ed.] or stops these supplies, this will probably be the best contribution to peace."
Details: Putin's spokesman added that Russia sees that "some European countries say they will continue to provide comprehensive assistance" to Ukraine.
"That is, they will probably somehow try to compensate for the decreasing volumes of ammunition and everything else," Peskov said.
He reiterated that supposedly "the largest volume has been provided by the United States so far".
"Well, we'll see. There is a lot of scattered information now. Mostly it comes with references to sources. And of course, we need to see how the situation on the ground develops. But the fact that the United States has been the main supplier of this war so far is obvious," Peskov said.
"If this [the suspension of US military aid – ed.] is true, then this is a decision that can actually encourage the Kyiv regime to engage in a peace process," Putin's spokesman concluded.

Where do we think Trump is getting the $350B number from?
He usually doesn't just pull stuff out of thin air. It might not be accurate, but he definitely heard it somewhere and keeps repeating it.
My guess? Its the value of the collective aid and equipment we've sent over there, before they basically make the value 0 because its "old".

Hello Balkans.
Hello Libya

A huge military conglomerate right on your border is something no country wants and it's totally understandable.
But why did Warsaw Pact countries seek out EU and NATO membership while the USSR still existed? The Visegrad Group was formed in 1988. Each of those countries that eventually joined were given several targets in order to join both the EU and NATO and then spent upwards of a decade to meet those targets so they could meet the standards for ascension. It seems odd that Russian security is more important than other nations. It's also an argument for nuclear proliferation, as the only thing that allows Russia to punch above its weight is the fact of nuclear weapons.

Those aren't the examples you should use, as those were explicitly US-led interventions. The best example would be Libya, which was French-led. The Balkan case in the 90's is too.

Does the Ukrainian constitution provide for impeachment?
Is it the parliament that declared martial law? Martial law that apparently suspends elections?
I assume Zelensky can't unilaterally impose or remove martial law or call for elections?
If he stepped down, would the VP(?) be a better negotiator and leader?

yes

The parliament passes a bill every 90 days to continue martial law and the bill is signed by the president.

Parliament could choose not to extend martial law and set a schedule for elections.

If he steps down the succession goes to the leader of parliament until a new president is elected.

He hears the shite somewhere. it might be some staffer, Fox news, some of these weird right wing influencers that are obviously very influential to him, or maybe he just doomscrolls and sees it. But the vast majority of the time he does actually hear the shite he says SOMEWHERE imo

Because they are a large country with abundant natural resources, a large military, and nukes? Which is why your next point

Is absolutely correct.
Nuclear proliferation makes a ton of sense for basically any country on an individual level because of the fact that you can punch up. People can discount the nuke issue all they want, but both the US and the rest of the world treat countries with nukes and countries with a lot of natural resources with kid gloves for the most part. Russia has both.
The issue with nuclear proliferation is obviously the potential macro level consequences.

You believe that.
See how beliefs work?
Eventually you'll even be able to answer a yes or no question about them.

Our invasion of Afghanistan was in response to 9/11. They were siding and abetting the perpetrators tthere. OBL and his crew.

I suggested he step down three weeks ago when it became obvious that he had become an obstacle to negotiations.
Even Trump and Vance started carrying the Tusdian message that he was a dictator.

If that were the prerequisites for an invasion we would have been in a lot more countries than that.
OBL was found in Pakistan, btw.

BTW, a guy like you who prides himself in the precise use of the English language is now defending Trump and his exaggerations??? You seem out of character.

Thanks for rundown.
Would love to know Parliament's sentiments on Zelensky's performance in the last year. And how they view ongoing Martial Law..
Also interesting that so many of his detractors consider him a dictator as there have been no elections. But how many regularly scheduled elections have actually been missed? For example, our presidential elections are every 4 years so technically a 3 year war could fall between the presidential elections.
His treatment of the opposition may be suspect - is it more of throwing insults like Trump or poison and open windows like Putin?
IMO, the best Ukraine can do is hold and strengthen what they ahve and biuld up both economically and militarily with help from its neighbors such that Putin won't try to get more than currently occupied. The details regarding sanctions, reparations, refugees etc would be a b***ch though.
