US judge orders temporary lift Trump administration's freeze on foreign aid

by Tim Zadorozhnyy February 14, 2025 10:55 AM

A federal judge ordered the Trump administration on Feb. 13 to temporarily lift its funding freeze on U.S. foreign aid programs, including development work worldwide, the Associated Press reported.

The ruling marks a significant setback for the administration's effort to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk have accused of operating outside the administration's agenda.

Musk, who heads the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has called USAID a "criminal organization" and advocated for its dissolution.

Judge Amir Ali issued the order in response to a lawsuit filed by the AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition and the Global Health Council, representing health organizations that receive U.S. funding for international projects.

Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, USAID has provided $2.6 billion in humanitarian aid, $5 billion in development assistance, and more than $30 billion in direct budget support to Kyiv.

The agency has funded school reconstruction, bomb shelters, critical energy repairs, and civil society programs.

Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant sarcophagus hit by Russian drone, Zelensky releases video of explosion

by Tim Zadorozhnyy February 14, 2025 9:46 AM (Updated: February 14, 2025 11:23 AM)

A Russian attack drone struck the protective shelter of the destroyed 4th reactor at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, President Volodymyr Zelensky reported on Feb. 14.

The strike damaged the sarcophagus, but the fire was extinguished and radiation levels remained stable, according to the president. Monitoring efforts continue to assess any potential risks.

"This is a terrorist threat to the entire world," Zelensky said, adding that the damage to the shelter is significant.

"The only country in the world that attacks such sites, occupies nuclear power plants, and wages war without any regard for the consequences is today's Russia."

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed the explosion. The organization reported that a drone struck the shelter's roof.

Chornobyl, the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster, remains a highly sensitive location. The explosion of the plant's reactor on Apr. 26, 1986, contaminated a vast area spanning Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia.

The sarcophagus was installed over the 4th reactor in the aftermath of the disaster to contain the uranium, plutonium, and radioactive dust at the site. The protective structure would only last 30 years, with the construction of a new sarcophagus completed in 2017.

"Ukraine is urging the international community to urgently intensify efforts in response to Russia's unprecedented act of nuclear terrorism. The attack on the shelter of the 4th power unit at Chornobyl poses a threat to the entire continent," said Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko.

Zelensky said the attack underscores Russia's continued disregard for global security.

"Russia continues to expand its army and shows no change in its deranged, anti-human state rhetoric. This means that Putin is definitely not preparing for negotiations — he is preparing to continue deceiving the world," he said.

Russia attacked the station's protective shelter on the day of the Munich Security Conference. Zelensky is leading Ukraine's delegation at the conference, where U.S. President Donald Trump's team is expected to outline its diplomatic strategy for ending Russia's war against Ukraine.

Andriy Yermak, head of Zelensky's office, said Ukraine would provide the U.S. with detailed information on Russia's attack on Chornobyl's protective shelter.

He also noted strong anger at the Munich Security Conference, with attendees expressing genuine outrage over the attack, recalling how the world had helped the Soviet Union during the 1980s disaster.

I agree, it is quite scary. The entire west threw everything we had at them. The latest tech, 300 billion in weapons and training, use of our sats for targeting, our personnel in country to use weapons like atacoms, embargos and tariffs, our USAID assassinated targets on their sovereign soil. And yet they still keep moving forward, every day, brick by brick.

It is indeed scary

Estonia's Foreign Intelligence Service (EFIS) Also known as USAID assessed that Russia is attempting to build its capabilities not only to support Russia's war effort in Ukraine but also to prepare for a potential future war with NATO,

Fixed it.....

I wondered how long it would take zelensky to start attacking nuclear sites in earnest and blame it on the Russians.

Use common sense, Russia has protected that site for nearly 3 years. Russia is definitely winning the war. Ukraine is not even in negotiations to end it.........and suddenly Russia attacks the site???????

They occupy the site and the surrounding area, if they wanted to blow it up they would have years ago.

Just shows how badly ukraine is losing to abandon killing their entire population with this senseless war, now they want to salt the earth by blowing up a nuclear site.

Oh well, Russia continues to march on day by day brick by brick.

I’m 4,533 pages late, but I’m excited that President Trump is ending this stupid war.

Ukrainians have been propped up by our money for far too long. Looking forward to no longer hearing about it and seeing those stupid Ukrainian flags on liberal social media profiles.

Interesting article in the WSJ today. The Putin tards won't be happy. It's behind the paywall but key points:

"Vance Wields Threat of Sanctions, Military Action to Push Putin Into Ukraine Deal

Vice President JD Vance said Thursday that the U.S. would hit Moscow with sanctions and potentially military action if Russian President Vladimir Putin won’t agree to a peace deal with Ukraine that guarantees Kyiv’s long-term independence.

Vance said the option of sending U.S. troops to Ukraine if Moscow failed to negotiate in good faith remained “on the table,” striking a far tougher tone than did Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who on Wednesday suggested the U.S. wouldn’t commit forces.

“The president is not going to go in this with blinders on,” Vance said."

This war has never been about just territory, it's more about Ukrainian independence and not being forced by Moscow into becoming another Belarus. Vance's comments are very encouraging.

The literal day after Trump pissed them off by talking to Putin for over an hour and then giving cargo pants the cliff notes and hanging up after 10 minutes

I'm usually not one for theories based entirely on speculation, but this actually has some legs.

NATO was founded on the basis of preparing for a "potential" future war with Russia

Of course Russia is preparing for a conflict with a group that has been openly hostile toward them. Doesn't mean they are preparing to attack NATO.

Its almost like you have 0 reading comprehension, 0 understanding of how the world operates, or more likely both.

That's funny because we legitimately can't track some of their subs.

They can't track some of ours either. Its the nature of the game with submarines, and the reason Russia invested so heavily in them.

It has nothing to do with our side. I’m just pointing out how agressive the Dems are at the federal level even though they had their arse kicked.
It’s even worse at the state and local levels where Dems are actively obstructing federal authorities.

Kallas on drone attack on Chornobyl: Russia not looking for peace

Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, condemned the Russian drone attack on the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, calling it "reckless."

Kaja Kallas posted this on X, according to Ukrinform.

"Such attacks on civilian nuclear sites are unacceptable. It shows once again that Russia is not looking for peace," she wrote.

Ukrinform

Russian drone attack on Chornobyl comparable to Russia’s seizure of Zaporizhzhya nuclear plant in 2022, energy minister says

The overnight Russian drone attack on the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant is comparable in impact to Russia’s seizure of the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant in 2022, Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko said on the national television on Feb. 14.

“When they [Russian occupiers] shelled the [Zaporizhzhya] plant with heavy weapons, what happened today is close to that in terms of consequences. The entire world worked to build this shelter, and today’s strike aimed to destroy it. This is a demonstrative response by Russia to all peace initiatives,” Halushchenko said.

It is insane to think about it. Russia has lost most of its modern armor and depleted its missile stocks, suffered hundreds of thousands of casualties and inflation is out of control in Russia. Plus Russia will need to come up with new training, new tactics, and strategy because their “2nd strongest military in the world” couldn’t even conquer Ukraine. Maybe if Putin is thinking about a war in 15 years or so it would not be insane. However if Russia thinks it can challenge NATO in the next 10 years or so it is crazy.

Vance Wields Threat of Sanctions, Military Action to Push Putin Into Ukraine Deal (WSJ)

quote:

Vice President JD Vance said Thursday that the U.S. would hit Moscow with sanctions and potentially military action if Russian President Vladimir Putin won’t agree to a peace deal with Ukraine that guarantees Kyiv’s long-term independence.

Vance said the option of sending U.S. troops to Ukraine if Moscow failed to negotiate in good faith remained “on the table,” striking a far tougher tone than did Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who on Wednesday suggested the U.S. wouldn’t commit forces.

Vance said the U.S. could pursue a range of measures, giving President Trump ample negotiating flexibility with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“There are economic tools of leverage, there are of course military tools of leverage” the U.S. could use against Putin, Vance said. “There’s a whole host of things that we could do. But fundamentally, I think the president wants to have a productive negotiation, both with Putin and with Zelensky.“

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal hours after Trump said he would start negotiating with Putin to end the war in Ukraine, Vance said: “I think there is a deal that is going to come out of this that’s going to shock a lot of people.”

The vice president’s remarks, coming a day before a meeting with Zelensky, offered the Trump administration’s strongest-yet support for Kyiv in the face of Russian demands that it disarm and replace the current government.

“The president is not going to go in this with blinders on,” Vance said. “He’s going to say, ‘Everything is on the table, let’s make a deal.’”

(posting the rest of the article for those without access)
quote:

On Thursday, Trump told reporters that Ukraine would be a party to talks with Russia, a key demand of Zelensky’s. But Trump also said that Russia should be allowed back into the Group of Seven club of wealthy countries and that membership for Ukraine in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was something Russia couldn’t allow.

Vance is scheduled to speak Friday at the Munich Security Conference, a gathering of global leaders to discuss shared threats. He said he intends to tell allied European leaders that they are stifling free speech and democracy by not working with populist parties.

European officials jostling to secure bilateral meetings with Vance hoped that the first top-level visit from the Trump administration would initiate a new level of cooperation with the U.S. at a time of global turmoil, and would offer details on the plan to end the war in Ukraine.

Instead, Vance said he would tell leaders that Europe must embrace the rise of antiestablishment politics, stop mass migration and curb progressive policies. He said he would call for a return of traditional values and ending migrant crime.

“It’s really about censorship and about migration, about this fear that President Trump and I have, that European leaders are kind of terrified of their own people,” Vance said. He said he would urge German politicians to work with all parties including the far-right and anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany party.

As policymakers began arriving Thursday in Munich, German police said an Afghan migrant drove a car into a crowd of labor union demonstrators in the city, injuring more than two dozen.

On Ukraine, Vance said it was too early to say how much of the country’s territory would remain in Russian hands or what security guarantees the U.S. and other Western allies could offer Kyiv. He said those details would need to be worked out in the peace talks.

“There are any number of formulations, of configurations, but we do care about Ukraine having sovereign independence,” he said.

Trump has said Putin wants to end the conflict, which the Russian leader launched three years ago with an attempted full-scale invasion that has killed hundreds of thousands of people and destroyed swaths of Ukraine. Russian forces control nearly 20% of Ukraine’s territory.

Vance said the Trump administration would aim to persuade Putin that Russia would achieve more at the negotiating table than on the battlefield.

Vance offered to reset the relationship with Russia after a successful agreement over Ukraine, saying that Moscow’s current isolation from Western markets made it Beijing’s junior partner. “It’s not in Putin’s interest to be the little brother in a coalition with China,” Vance said.

At a NATO meeting Wednesday in Brussels, Hegseth said borders for Ukraine were unlikely to be as they were before Russia initially invaded in 2014, negotiations wouldn’t end with Ukraine as a NATO member and non-Americans would have to provide security guarantees.

Hegseth clarified his comments Thursday, telling reporters in Brussels that “what concessions will be made or what concessions will not be made” will be up to Trump.

Vance agreed that Trump could change his mind depending on how the negotiations unfold.

“President Trump could say, look, we don’t want this thing, we might not like this thing, but we’re willing to put it back on the table if the Russians aren’t being good negotiating partners, or there are things that are very important to Ukrainians that we might want to take off the table,” he said.

Speaking of European politics, Vance attacked the continent’s mainstream politicians, saying they used Soviet-style vocabulary such as disinformation or misinformation to dismiss viewpoints with which they disagree. Russian interference in Western democracy has been overstated in the U.S. and Europe, Vance said. He said refusing to curb migration was a much greater threat to democracy than Moscow’s meddling in elections.

“If your democratic society can be taken down by $200,000 of social media ads, then you should think seriously about how strong your grip on or how strong your understanding of the will of the people actually is,” Vance said.

Keeping far-right parties that campaign against migration out of government coalitions is curtailing the will of the people, who have repeatedly been asking for more border control, he said. “I think, unfortunately, the will of voters has been ignored by a lot of our European friends,” he said.

In his address, Vance will also back Elon Musk, the billionaire businessman and Trump ally. Musk’s political campaigning in Europe, including for the Alternative for Germany party—a group under surveillance for extremism—has drawn near-universal criticism from European leaders such as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron. Both men were registered to attend but their representatives said they wouldn’t be present at Vance’s speech. Macron won’t come to Munich and Scholz will only arrive later, according to French and German officials.

Vance said Musk doesn’t speak for Trump. But he said he agreed with Musk that European countries needed to stop letting in large numbers of migrants from the Middle East, Africa and elsewhere. He also said that European leaders were wrong to criticize Musk for speaking out.
