The U.S. Army has started diversifying its supplier base for 155mm artillery shells, moving away from the bottleneck of a single source that has endangered the flow of fresh ammo, according to a top service official.
quote:
“Part of what’s enabling that are things like the brand-new plant that we opened up in Mesquite, Texas, a couple of months ago. We’ve got a new load, assembly, pack plant in Camden, Arkansas, that’s going to be opening up pretty soon. So those are examples of where you see the payoff in that investment in the organic industrial base,” she said.
The Army had been making 155mm shells at a single plant in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and a privately operated facility nearby. All of the shells were transported to one place – Iowa Army Ammunition Plant – where they are packed with explosives.
The service quickly went under contract with General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems to build a new, mostly automated facility in Mesquite to build more shells using production systems from Turkey. And it also contracted more shell production with a company in Ontario, Canada – IMT Defense.
Shell production will go from basically one facility to four by early next year, Bush said.
The load, assemble and pack process will, by early next year, be conducted at two other facilities outside of Iowa — General Dynamics in Camden, Arkansas, and Day & Zimmerman in Parsons, Kansas, Bush said.
The Army awarded $1.5 billion in contracts to companies globally to procure bulk energetics like TNT and IMX-104 explosive as well primers and fuses in 2023.
Even so, the Army is also setting up two locations to produce propellant. “This is the propellant that goes inside the modular artillery charges right now, it’s only done in one place. It’s Valleyfield in Canada,” Bush said. Another propellant production facility will be set up at Radford Army Ammunition Plant in Virginia and the facility in Canada will have a capacity increase, he added

The only place that made combustible cartridge cases – Armtec Defense Technologies – was in Coachella, California, well-known for its music festival, but also for being located along the San Andreas Fault with a high risk of large earthquakes. Day & Zimmerman will produce the cases at another location in Texarkana, Texas.
The Army is also setting up two locations producing propellant charges – American Ordnance in Middletown, Iowa, and General Dynamics in Camden, Arkansas.
“There [is] still the occasional single point, if you go down far enough, I’m not sure we can ever eliminate them entirely,” Bush said. “But we can build in more redundancy than we had before, which was, frankly, a very fragile setup where I could give you grid coordinates for like, four buildings in America, and if one of those, something happened tomorrow, we weren’t making anything … it definitely isn’t acceptable now, and we’re trying to get away from it

I love seeing my hometown of Camden, Arkansas, getting some more jobs. Lord knows that area needs them.

The production figures are insignificant compared their needs. And we’re not building artillery systems for them.

I'm keeping an eye out for more reports about North Koreans deserting the front lines in Ukraine. Unless they are defecting to Ukraine, sort of hard to buy sources for now.

For starters Ukraine has deeper topsoil than the Great Plains of the US which is about 6 feet. Russia's arable land is not that rich and less bushels per acre..
The big issue right now is the shortage of money globally and ability to pay for grain per my convo with an international grain trader of 40+ years. His company's assets is just going to sit on most of what they get from the Canadian harvest this year. There is no one with funding enough to pay who is buying. They are just going to spend cash on hand to enlarge their grain elevators across Saskatchewan before next year's harvest.
FWIW, he is with a much smaller company than he used to be, which was Continental Grain, then No.2 behind Cargill in the world trade.
Right now capital is in very short supply globally.

I bet we aren’t the only ones ratcheting up and besides Russia doesn’t have enough either. They count on NK to supply them shells.

“The Czech-led initiative to fund and procure urgently artillery ammo for Ukraine is progressing steadily – the first 180,000 shells have been contracted and should arrive by June,” František Šulc, the first Deputy Minister of Defense of the Czech Republic told Defense News during the IDEB defense fair, held here May 14-16.

The factory stopped making the 122-millimeter shells in 1988 as the Cold War came to a close. But soon the assembly lines will be running again. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has turned Soviet-era arms and ammunition into critically important matériel as Western nations seek to supply Ukraine with the munitions it needs to foil Moscow’s assault. And so in January, 35 years after the last 122-millimeter shells left the Terem plant, the company recommissioned production.

“The Ministry of Defence (MOD) placed an order in June 2023 with BAE Systems to provide an eight-fold increase in production capability of 155mm shells. The MOD contract is for significant initial quantities of 155mm shells which will reinstate and build sovereign capability and stockpiles. In respect of artillery ammunition being providing to Ukraine, since the start of the conflict, the UK has donated over 300,000 rounds of artillery ammunition – including 155mm and Former Soviet Union calibres.”
No it’s not enough, but market forces respond if there is money to be made.

Isw update Oct 16th
quote:
Key Takeaways:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky presented Ukraine's five-part Victory Plan aimed at winning the war by the end of 2025 to the Verkhovna Rada on October 16, which includes a promise to contribute experienced Ukrainian troops to defending NATO's eastern flank following the resolution of the war in Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's current theory of victory in Ukraine seeks to protract the war and posits that Russian forces can outlast Western support for Ukraine and collapse Ukrainian resistance by winning a war of attrition. Russia will likely face serious medium- and long-term constraints that will undermine this strategic effort, however.
Imprisoned ardent nationalist and former Russian officer Igor Girkin notably questioned the Kremlin's articulated theory of victory and assessed that 2025 and possibly late 2024 will be “a serious test” for Russia because the Kremlin has yet to address medium- to long-term force-generation and defense-industrial-capacity constraints.
Girkin also assessed that Russian Summer–Fall 2024 offensive campaign did not accomplish its goals in the entire theater and is unlikely to do so ahead of the muddy season, although Russian forces are continuing intense offensive operations in several operational directions in Ukraine.
US President Joe Biden announced a new military assistance package for Ukraine worth $425 million following a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on October 16.
The South Korean Ministry of Defense (MoD) stated on October 16 that it is "closely" monitoring indications that North Korean troops are directly supporting Russia's war effort in Ukraine amid reports that the Russian military is training North Korean soldiers.
Russian forces recently advanced in northern Kharkiv Oblast, near Kreminna, near Siversk, and near Toretsk.

Not just money to be made but to even pay for capital investment in plant and equipment. It takes major orders to have this, orders like for the US government in size.

Free markets actually are terrible here
These companies more interested in profit than total output, total output is irrelevant, and two, they're not going to dump money into expanding production if they believe the war end in relatively near future.
You actually want state owned factories for ammunition, like Scranton.

Ukraine to be NATO member in future
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has said that Ukraine will join the North Atlantic Alliance as its 33rd or 34th member in the future. This is reported by “Europaiska Pravda”.
“At the moment it looks like Ukraine will be the 33rd member. But perhaps someone else will pop out in front of it. But Ukraine will be a member of NATO in the future. This is what we have decided in Washington. So the question now is about chronology,” the publication quoted the NATO head as saying.
