Won't be long before sailors in the Black Sea fleet will be handed rifles.

They already did that over a year ago with sailors from the Baltic Fleet.

The Economist reports that Russia has already lost over 350 square kilometers of Russian territory. That's more than half of the territory that Russia has gained this year with their offensive.

Perhaps, but I believe that Western inaction and Obama’s lack of leadership invited Putin to go further. And why not? People saw that Russia had eyes on Ukraine and the West was doing very little to help Ukraine.

Obama at the time.needed the Russians for his Iran nuclear deal. He and Biden believed and continue the practice of by placating/going easy on Iran you will strengthen the moderate elements in Iran's government.
Idiotic foreign policy. There are no moderates in Iran's government.

So are Biden's. He doubled down and hired the same clowns that worked in Obama's white house.

And you see the results.

It's stupid, but it's also what Trump tried with North Korea.

Look at Merkel's policy with Putin and Russia. We will bring them into the western sphere by trade. They will love us and be nice!! German politicians bought and paid for and Germany Industry greed.

Look at the US policy with China. We will empower them with trade and this will enable us to change the system from within. They will be more like us and they will eventually get rid of that nasty old CCP. We will all get filthy rich at the same time!!!

Completely idiotic

We created a two tier monster that we never faced in the Soviet Union. All for greed and by selling out the American worker.

A personal friend served as a captain in Army intel in Germany in the late 1970's. They didn't trust Germans with much other except minor info. German military was like a sieve straight to Russia

Also from The Economist:

quote:

“Ukraine has committed units from at least four elite brigades, meaning that the strike force is probably much greater. Ukraine has mined the main road leading south-east to Belgorod, and has significant air defences in the area”

So, earlier in this thread we had someone speculating about 1000 Ukrainian troops in this this invasion.force.

Now, we know that the real number is probably 10 times higher than that.

Not being mentioned is the Ukrainian landing on Kendra Spit and destroying Russian armor there. UKR did land on Kinburn Spit sometime back and roamed freely for a bit. This is further into the Black Sea.

This was actually working pretty much before Xi took over in 2014, and Xi was emboldened in his thinking by Putin's anti-Western rhetoric...

in any event, we did kind of wrap China in a Chinese finger trap kind of relationship with the US as a market... and as we pull back from that now China will be screwed.

Gerasimov ignored warnings of Ukrainian troop buildup near border, Bloomberg reports

by Elsa Court and The Kyiv Independent news desk August 8, 2024 11:40 PM

Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian army, appears to have ignored intelligence warnings that Ukraine's Armed Forces were gathering near the border of Kursk Oblast, Bloomberg reported on Aug. 8, citing a source close to the Kremlin.

Gerasimov and top officials "seemingly dismissed intelligence warnings that Ukrainian soldiers were gathering near the border with Russia’s western Kursk region as much as two weeks before they began the assault," Bloomberg said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was also not briefed on the troop buildup, the unnamed source reportedly told Bloomberg.

The source indicated that "while Gerasimov is unlikely to be removed in the short term, patience in the Kremlin over his handling of the war is running out," Bloomberg added.

I say screw them and screw them hard if you can. Our dependency on China is dangerous. The CCP is not our friend. That party and society are evil. Anything that we can do to weaken or hurt them economically is a plus for our security. Personally I am for rebuilding the middle class in America instead of continuing to build one in China. I worry for the young people in this nation, I don't know how they are going to afford housing, etc. Costs are ridiculous for them.

What's are the Ukrainian objectives in Kursk? If this Telegram post is actually indicating fighting in Rylsk, it might provide a clue:

It was highlighted by DefMon, who also helpfully provided this map:

Of course, the Telegram post might only mean that Ukraine struck a Russian position in Rylsk with HIMARS or something. But if Ukraine is pushing in that direction, they could be trying to cut off that giant piece of Russian land.

This is going to get denied by Biden/Sullivan, but Ukraine has to keep asking:

quote:

The Ukrainian offensive appeared to be more successful than even many officials in Kyiv expected.

Ukrainian officials are now requesting that the U.S. to allow them to use long-range ATACMs to hit air fields that Russia is using to retaliate against them — a policy decision Kyiv believes will allow it to retain a portion of Kursk Oblast.

“This will give them the leverage they need for negotiations with Russia — this is what it’s all about,” the Zelensky adviser said.

U.S. officials have said Washington is reaching out to the Ukrainian military to learn more about the operation and its objectives.
