INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 27 July 2023
As Ukrainian forces continue major offensive operations in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, one of the single most influential Russian weapon systems in the sector is the Ka-52 HOKUM attack helicopter. Russia has highly likely lost around forty Ka-52s since the invasion, but the type has also imposed a heavy cost on Ukraine.
In recent months, Russia has highly likely augmented the force in the south with at least a small number of brand new, Ka-52M variants: a heavily modified aircraft, informed by lessons from Russia's experience in Syria. Evidence supporting the M variant's use in Ukraine includes photos posted on social media of aircrew posing next to the new aircraft and thanking well-wishers for sending them morale items.
Another key improvement to the Ka-52 fleet is the integration of a new anti-tank missile, the LMUR, which has a range of approximately 15km. Ka-52 crews have been quick to exploit opportunities to launch these weapons beyond the range of Ukrainian air defences.

Russia raises conscription age to increase dwindling forces in Ukraine
The Russian State Duma, Russia's lower house of parliament, voted on July 25 to raise the maximum age of conscription from 27 to 30, according to the state news agency TASS.
The law, which will go into effect on January 1, 2024, increases the pool of citizens required to serve a compulsory year of military service.
The law also bans conscripts from leaving the country once they receive their draft notice.
In March of 2023, the UK Defense Ministry reported that Duma Defense Committee Chair Andrey Kartapolov suggested the age extension in order to increase Russia's forces without resorting to forced mobilization.
Russia calls conscripts up twice a year for mandatory military service. The new law, co-authored by Kartapolov, is expected to add 2.4 million men to Russia's conscription base.
Kartapolov told Russia's Interfax news agency that "the demographic situation is serious," requiring an immediate raise to the age limit rather than a gradual one.

You're right. Ukraine losing at least 40 armored vehicles (many are bradleys and leopards) in a suicide mission, last night is LOL-worthy.
Cool story, bro. Can't wait to see the video.

It's not clear who the "US officials" were that the NY Times spoke with yesterday, but they said that "this is the big test," with respect to the Ukrainian assault towards Tokmak.
Today, by contrast, we have this story in the Washington Post, presumably after speaking with different "US officials," that says exactly the opposite.

A U.S. official expressed caution in drawing conclusions from initial battlefield movements that the main thrust of the counteroffensive has begun.
“We are seeing signs of preparatory moves for additional forces in the Zaporizhzhia area to come into the fight. But it’s not clear what the purpose of those moves may be,” said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive and ongoing operations.
It could be that units were sent there for shaping operations, the official said, which are missions that help set favorable conditions for a larger battle, such as finding weaknesses to exploit or destroying enemy defenses. It could also be that fresh troops are coming in to replace soldiers exhausted from the hard fight against dug-in Russian forces, the official said.
“There is not a high sense of confidence that this is the big move,” the official said.

The body of another victim of the russian missile attack, which took place on July 23, was discovered in Odesa, the city council reported.
The woman's body was found in a non-residential annex near a destroyed private house on Parkova Street. The identity of the deceased is still being established.
Thus, the number of victims of the attack increased to two.

So then counter battery fire destroyed the Orc artillery and further advances made?

What counter battery fire are you seeing?

Here is one to start with.
That video shows a couple of moving things that appear to get hit. For all we know, they might be more tractors or combines like the Russian MoD hit before and claimed that they were Leopards. Or this might show Russians hitting their own equipment -- it wouldn't be the first such video.

It could be. It’s nearly impossible to tell. It could be the case that some videos of Russians getting killed are really Ukrainians. One thing for sure is that both sides are taking massive casualties.

There's a growing consensus from observers on both sides that Ukraine has completed the capture of Staromaiorske. Here's pro-Russian Suriyak: LINK
Control of Staromaiorske also means that Ukraine should be able to take the adjacent town of Urozhaine somewhat easily -- there are already reports of Ukrainian forces in the town.
Ukraine will now push south towards Staromlynivka, the last settlement of any significant size in front of the main Russian defensive line in that sector.
Here's the relevant map section, with the main Russian defensive line shown in red at the bottom of the map.

This is the Ukrainian push, led by the 47th Mechanized east of Robotyne (also west of Verbove). In this case, it would appear that the anti-tank ditch successfully stopped the BMP. If it had made it across, I wonder if it would have proceeded towards the dragons teeth, or if it would have gone back.
Yes, this is only the first of the three rows of such prepared defenses that the Russians have, but it is useful to point out the ISW report from last night mentioning the obvious that, if Ukraine can break the first line, the second and third lines might not be as hard, as Russia might not have the same number of troops, artillery, etc. to defend the later lines.
Of course, the flip side of that is that, if Ukraine uses up too much combat power breaking the first line, they might not have enough to seriously contest the subsequent lines.

Wow, Ruffles was right, and Ukraine just lost 40 vehicles attacking near Robotyne. Oh wait ...
Colt, seriously, you just make yourself look stupid defending such crap. If you don't want to be treated like a troll, you shouldn't act like one.

It appears that AFU has passed to the east side of Robtyne and taking it from the rear. I hear the Russians like being taken from the rear while in the trenches.
