He brings up tremendous Russian victories in WWII to wave the flag, but he forgot to mention that those great WWII victories were enabled by guess what? Tremendous help from the West.
He also says Lyman is a trap, a couple of weeks ago he said the Kharkiv offensive was a trap.

Lyman was a trap - but not just in the sense of a mauling operation. Ukraine’s all out effort to force the village is a physical instantiation of their rejection of Putin’s call to negotiate. Their last chance to avoid the Winter of Yuri has been squandered. Season 2 begins soon.

I’ve forgotten the numbers now but I believe we sent them more vehicles than we ourselves actually used for our own troops in the European theater.
From Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lend-Lease#US_deliveries_to_the_Soviet_Union
quote:
In total, the U.S. deliveries to the USSR through Lend-Lease amounted to $11 billion in materials: over 400,000 jeeps and trucks; 12,000 armored vehicles (including 7,000 tanks, about 1,386[58] of which were M3 Lees and 4,102 M4 Shermans);[59] 11,400 aircraft (of which 4,719 were Bell P-39 Airacobras, 3,414 were Douglas A-20 Havocs and 2,397 were Bell P-63 Kingcobras)[60] and 1.75 million tons of food.[61]
The United States delivered to the Soviet Union from October 1, 1941, to May 31, 1945 the following: 427,284 trucks, 13,303 combat vehicles, 35,170 motorcycles, 2,328 ordnance service vehicles, 2,670,371 tons of petroleum products (gasoline and oil) or 57.8 percent of the aviation fuel including nearly 90 percent of high-octane fuel used,[35] 4,478,116 tons of foodstuffs (canned meats, sugar, flour, salt, etc.), 1,911 steam locomotives, 66 diesel locomotives, 9,920 flat cars, 1,000 dump cars, 120 tank cars, and 35 heavy machinery cars. Provided ordnance goods (ammunition, artillery shells, mines, assorted explosives) amounted to 53 percent of total domestic consumption.[35] One item typical of many was a tire plant that was lifted bodily from the Ford Company's River Rouge Plant and transferred to the USSR. The 1947 money value of the supplies and services amounted to about $11 billion.[66]

Russia has >3 times population of Ukraine, so victory for Ukraine is unlikely in total war. If you care about the people of Ukraine, seek peace. Dude see this conflict as a math problem.
Musk is right that this is a math problem, sort of. But the idea that this is simply a population equation is horrible for someone as smart as Musk.
Of course this is a proxy war now, and Russia has no chance at this point. Russia has proven to be inept militarily, and has thrown their punches as much as they can. They are punch drunk and falling apart and can't possibly cope with what the west is suppling Ukraine with. Ukraine is being supported by a much larger population base, and especially economy, than Russia can dream of.
I really hate the price that Ukraine is paying in lives. While we have people that whinge about spending way less less than 1% of the recent bailouts that both groups supported. This is all for that idiot Putin's ego. But deeper than that Russia has just not changed. The Gulag Archipelago books and Chernobyl TV series still apply. How do you fix that?
Posted on 10/3/22 at 5:10 pm to Tigris
I don't believe they can fix it, it is a systemic problem.

Another major factor for the Soviets in WW2 was that they relocated most of their heavy industry to beyond the Ural mountains, out of reach of the German bombers.
By the end of the war, Russia was turning out quality heavy tanks, much better than anything we were giving them at the time.

Exactly. We’re going to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian. Just because a bunch of Cold War holdovers in the DC bureaucracy hate Russia reflexively and need to justify their own existence. Do you know how many Ukrainians and Russians are going to fricking die because we’re funding it as a vanity project? It’s sickening.

Arguably the biggest US contribution to the Russian war effort was the Studebaker truck. Russia could build tanks or trucks, they couldn't build both at the same time, and they needed a lot more trucks than tanks.
The Army Air Corps hated it, it was out of US frontline service by the middle of 1943. But Russians loved its ruggedness and heavy armament suitable for close air support.

Are you assuming Ukraine would have sued for peace (allowed a takeover) had the US not intervened?

Rybar end of day update on the Eastern front

quote:
?????????? The situation in the Starobelsk direction
by the end of October 3, 2022
??Flint direction
??After the fall of Liman and the loss of the left bank of the Zherebets River, Russian troops retreated to Kremennaya, where work is underway to create a fortified area. Concentrated artillery fire suppresses enemy attempts to advance towards the city. Attack aviation of the RF Armed Forces is working on the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
??Ukrainian formations continue to transfer reinforcements to Liman, Torskoye and Terny, regrouping advancing formations.
?? The village of Terny has become a springboard for attacks by Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance groups on the Svatovo-Kremennaya road. Subdivisions of Russian troops repulse attacks by enemy mobile groups on Peschanoe-Krasnopopovka.
??Svatov direction
??The front line north of Kremennaya is unstable: due to the cut communication and lack of communication, there are reports of the occupation of Makeevka and the advance of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the direction of Raygorodok.
??In connection with the exit of mobile groups of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to the Borovaya-Svatovo road and the emergence of a danger of encirclement of the Borovaya garrison, a decision was made to withdraw the RF Armed Forces from Borovaya, Podliman and Shiykovka in the direction of Raigorodka.
??Reinforcements from the territory of the LPR are being transferred to positions in the vicinity of Svatovo, preparations are underway for the defense of the city.
??Kupyanskoye direction
??Ukrainian units advancing from Kupyansk put pressure on the positions of the Russian Armed Forces at heights in the Orlyanka-Kislovka section. There are oncoming maneuvering battles in the fields east of Kupyansk.
??At the Tavolzhansky sector, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are building up a grouping in the vicinity of Gryanikovka and Masyutovka for a second attempt to attack the positions of the RF Armed Forces.
Most likely, the RF Armed Forces will continue their planned retreat from the lines on the Oskol River to prepared positions around Svatovo, trying to inflict unacceptable losses on the superior enemy forces with artillery fire.
In this case, the entire left bank of the Oskol River will come under the confident control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the coming days.

That’s a hard question to answer because the US intervention started before 2014 but basically yes. I don’t think anyone on the plant who’s being honest about it thinks that Ukraine could continue holding out without the support of the US and its proxies. The Ukrainians sure don’t believe that.

Kyiv would’ve probably been captured without US intervention

Kh-kh. I apologize, but here, according to fresh momentary reports, Rybar declares that we have controlled the undermining of the road through the Dudchanskoe reservoir. This means that, contrary to even my most pessimistic expectations, the Dudchans stood for two days, and are now occupied by the enemy. It is strange to say the truth about stopping the Armed Forces of Ukraine with this explosion, to put it mildly, since it will not be difficult for the enemy to bypass the reservoir. The situation is becoming critical.

Peace in favor of freedom (if there is such a thing) should be considered an amoral concept in any democratic republic. I'll never understand someone advocating for such a thing.

But the Kyiv offensive was just a feint and Russia didn't want Kyiv.
Or so I've heard.

If Kyiv had fallen then they would’ve surrender by now because there would be no HIMARS or more Migs or bullets or Javelins. Sanctions probably wouldn’t have even been enacted, at least not in any really damaging way.

Putin can be a hero then and just withdraw back to the 1992 borders…..

Just to keep everyone on their toes haircut launched a missile a bit a go. Japan issued an emergency order to seek shelter. The missile apparently went over Japan and the order was canceled.
