I'm certainly not trying to be a Debbie Downer. This is a problem in Europe which needs to be addressed whether for the sake of being off Russia natural gas or not. Despite being under the EU umbrella, infrastructure is mostly regional.
It was the early 80's when the glut of natural gas in coastal TX and LA was over as natural gas pipeline transport expanded away from the coast expanded drastically. We enjoyed extremely inexpensive electricity which was produced from almost free natural gas. Most of the aluminum production died in TX and LA as a result of price of electricity going up due competition with new markets elsewhere in the USA for purchase.
