My sauce(s) in Ukraine told me that they are being slow and deliberate because the Ukrainians are hoping the Russian soldiers panic and flee as they get closer to being cut off like they did when the Ukies had them mostly surrounded in the Battles of Kyiv and Kharkiv. The Ukies would prefer to not destroy Kherson in order to take it back. They are prepared to do so if needed but would prefer to just let the Russians run away.

Germany and France can't pull a Neville Chamberlain on Ukraine for two reasons. One the Ukrainians are willing to keep fighting even if France and Germany stop supporting them. Two, as long as Turkey, Poland, the UK, and the USA keep supporting Ukraine they will be ok. France and Germany have not delivered on their material or financial promises to Ukraine. Hell North Macedonia has delivered more military aid to Ukraine than Germany has. Ukraine is more likely to tell France and Germany to go f**k themselves than they are to be forced into a ceasefire by France and Germany.

The Germans did not choose to fortify their positions instead of attacking Paris. They were forced to because the French and British defeated the German army in the 1st Battle of the Marne in 09/1914 and the Germans did not have the troops strength to regroup after defeat because they had been forced to divert troops to the eastern theater to defeat the 2 Russian armies that had entered East Prussia in late 08/1914 and send troops to keep the Russians from marching to Adriatic Sea and splitting the Central Powers in half after the Austrian-Hungarian army completely fell apart after its defeat in the Battle of Galicia in 09/1914.
