Last minute/Same day flights

Does anyone roll the dice and book a same day flight or done it before? I know everyone here flies private but I’ll have to go cheap and do commercial. I’m not sure of work schedule the day of the trip and if I don’t have anything, would like to catch an early flight to get it started early. If I book now, I’ll have to play it safe and get a mid/late afternoon flight. Has anyone book a flight the night before/same day, and if so, was it a ridiculous price? Would rather save a few hundred and pound brews at the airport if I’m looking at paying double.

Had to do it multiple times for work and it is extremely expensive. Do not recommend

I am too frickin' anal with travel schedules to do that. My wife, on the other hand, could get on a flight and let them tell her after takeoff where it was headed.

This trip is for pleasure. I work in med devices and the only doctor that does surgery that day adds surgeries on up until a couple of days prior and I don’t have anyone available to cover for me Thursday.

It’s usually expensive by that time because they know most people are desperate.
Within a week before, you can typically get some good deals though. But in my experience, trying to book a same day or very last minute flight will usually be ridiculous price.

Book multiple southwest flights well in advance at a cheap rate and use whichever one you want. Cancel the unused ones the day of and keep the travel credit.

i had a professor years ago who said he would walk up to the counter a little bit before a flight left and if they had seats left he would offer a cheaper amount than they were going for. said that flights leaving anyway and some revenue for the seat was better than none so the airlines would usually accept. he could take a lot of last minute weekend getaways on the cheap

Look up same day flight changes. This might be your best bet, but understand the rules about timing and fare classes. Assuming buying the flight now is a greater than $75 savings compared to buying the flight day of (for United at least), it's a better deal to book now and change later.
