they're i unchartered territory now

-they've never used the aux spillway
-they've never done any sort of study that mimics what is happening right now

they just said on whatever stream I'm watching that the concern now is that the area around the aux spillway (where it broke thru) is so potentially damaged, they are concerned that the aux dam itself is getting too much pressure and they are worried about a structural failure. They're focusing on relieving that pressure as high priority

I got the idea that the failure was occurring (if looking upstream from below the auxiliary structure) to the left of the auxiliary structure there is an earthen embankment and parking lot area and they were concerned it was going to cut through the earthen embankment around the end of the structure and then would erode out about 30 vertical feet down and bypass and undercut the structure causing it to fail.

you are exactly right

This parking lot is underwater.....it's not supposed to be

It's dam->spillway->emergency spillway

now, it's past that

the aux spillways usually arent rated for exceedingly high pressure...especially not with a hole.

i feel bad for all those people.

First I'm hearing about this. Are they basically clear of the worst now? Has anyone been impacted besides evacs?

The thing is they don't know how bad it would be if it fails. No studies. Sacramento county officials are watching closely cause it could affect them as well.

I wouldnt say that

the immediate threat level has dropped a bit in the last 3 hours

however (a) there's still a "hole" in the aux spillway, (b) the main spillway looks like Baghdad with a hole in it and (c) it's supposed to rain, rain, rain and more rain the next week

This is small potatoes compared the the cataclymic flooding that took place in the northwest about 12K years ago.

If you evacuate a city with an hours warning and you have police and swift water rescue in route from all over the state there better be a problem.

Swift water rescue teams from Los Angeles are responding.
