The opinion piece he wrote

Lake Charles has been ignored by both administrations despite going through 4 natural disasters in 9 months while dealing with Covid fallout.
The Mayor has been trying everything he can yet no action has taken place. Biden specifically said help was on the way yet nothing has changed so Nick wrote about it.

Being the kind sweet people that never let a chance to hate the South and make assumptions go to waste, liberals attack Lake Charles in the comments. 99.9% of them have never been or probably never heard of Lake Charles until this article.

quote:

Conservatives, like this mayor, always vote to get federal government out of their lives. Yet, they always come running for hand outs, even though they choose to live in a flood zone. They don't want their tax dollars going to liberal states or liberal programs but when they've had yet another flood, they demand my tax dollars to bail them out. Red state voter are liars. They want the federal government in their lives just like everyone else.

I will gladly support them with my tax dollars, when they apologize to us for lying to us and for supporting and voting for insurrectionists. Until then, I suggest they keep my tax dollars and the federal government out of their lives as they voted.

quote:

I'm sure this region is thickly solid with trumpists but........TRUMP DIDN"T HELP THEM????? I'm also sure that their other God, you know Jesus and all that, should have helped them, since they're solidly evangelical. Where were their gods, real donald trump, and real Jesus????? Seems like real Climate Change does not respect the other gods. Boy are they reduced to the dregs to have to appeal to the compassion of us liberal atheists. Yes, atheists often have the compassion that is completely lacking in those who consider themselves religionists.

quote:

Hey Nic, 66% of those polled in the South want to secede from the union. That is your best bet, because I’m just not feeling the love coming from the rest of the country.

quote:

Let’s see - Louisiana supported Trump, hates “socialism”, refuses vaccination and masking anti-covid measures and now wants a handout from the feds, funded by prosperous Blue State taxes. I say stuff it.

quote:

Southwest Louisiana — has suffered through four federally declared weather disasters.
Well, maybe a rescue would be a good idea, but then weather disasters five, six and seven and…will happen and their hands will come out again.
I just can’t believe that God doesn’t take care of them. The majority, I suspect, will claim that God decides (being such a God Fearing region) and He just isn’t, but the Godless (Yes,…) Federal Government is expected to come to the rescue over and over again.
Yes, God works in mysterious ways or not at all.

quote:

This is what climate change looks like. This is exactly what has been predicted for decades. Sorry, but it’s only going to get worse.

quote:

Thanks to the World's inaction on Climate Change, things will only get worse for these people from here. As callous as it sounds, it's already too late. They need to move inland now.

quote:

Four weather disasters in less than a year? I think nature is telling you something.

quote:

"God" is speaking to those morons, but they like to listen to what their hack preachers say.

quote:

Help to relocate yes. Help to rebuild no.

Time to stop people from suffering in this type of situation

quote:

Mother Nature wants you out of there. It's tough, but it's time to move.

quote:

The storms are more frequent now, right? It's because of climate change, something the Republican Party continues to deny and they hobble any attempts to do something meaningful about it. Sounds like you're in an unfortunate position for these powerful storms and this is happening frequently. You may have to move, finally, but I hope you get some immediate help from the government.

quote:

I really don’t know what to say. I’m very sorry for you all, I truly am. But I’m so tired of people who don’t want to help others, or pay taxes for the common good, or get vaccinated to protect at-risk people, or the community in general, and especially who voted for Trump to stick it to the libs. I’m especially tired of them then wanting my taxes to help them when things go wrong. And wanting to maintain their life in a way that’s no longer viable, in the face of facts like climate change. I think I’m all out of sympathy. I’m tired.

quote:

This is one of the most obnoxiously stupid "opinions" I have ever read on Washington Post.
The seas are rising, so Lake Charles is now a lagoon, not a lake.
Relocate ... and to ground higher than 100 year melt, because without drastic environmental action - fossil fuel production and pollution cutback, for one - that is coming far sooner than even the most pessimistic current predictions.
This isn't rocket science ... even for bubbas.

quote:

2020 election results in Lake Charles: Trump 67%, Biden 31%. Countless republican speeches against climate change. Countless republican speeches against big government. Countless republican bills reducing Federal agencies. You get what you asked for. Need we say more?

If we hate each other so much we just need a divorce.

Or just start fighting because that’s how it ends. These mealy mouthed lily-livered yellow bellied quislings wouldn’t be so quick to talk smack with a mouth full of broken teeth.

quote:

I believe Donald Trump took 67% of the votes in that county in Nov 2020 which tells me this is a place that believes it's every man for himself, so why are they demanding we liberal do-gooders (who they hate) send them assistance. Shouldn't they be figuring out how to pull themselves up by their OWN bootstraps?

quote:

Nic Hunter, maybe you should write a second opinion piece. One that asks your own Republican Senators and Congressmen/women why not a SINGLE one of them supports Biden’s climate mitigation/clean energy efforts. Not one. And in your long editorial you fail to mention the real problem facing your parish - climate change - a SINGLE TIME. Not once. I have sympathy for your town, but none for you, as you’re sidestepping the real issue and pulling the wool over people’s eyes. You and your party have failed them and, now, even underwater, are still trying to avoid the real issue here yet desperately asking others to join the ruse and hand over cash. God help those the Republican Party are killing, displacing and failing with their greed, dirty fossil fuel money and science denialism.

quote:

Why should taxpayers foot the bill for a community that has stayed there and rebuilt and rebuilt and rebuilt and rebuilt....time and time again after upmteen hurricanes. I, for one, AM SICK OF IT! Get the heck out of Dodge, you residents of Lake Charles, LA, or bail yourselves out for a change. You stayed there despite being flooded out and having homes destroyed storm after storm after storm - FOR YEARS. So pay for it yourselves. Can't afford it? Then move, like the people in "Grapes of Wrath" were forced to move in order to survive in the 1930s during the Dust Bowl. THEY didn't get federal taxpayer dollars, why should you?

quote:

With global warming, there are some areas that will no longer be habitable. We don't seem to want to face that reality. Rather than trying to rebuild after every storm, it may be time to relocate.

quote:

At some point the ancients would have realized the gods were not happy about them living there. With a more practical and scientific look, it may be they really shouldn't be living there. It wouldn't be the first time cities were abandoned for climatic changes.

quote:

You are right. We don't care. I am tired of bailing out southern coastal waste product states from floods, hurricanes, oil spills, and other environmental disasters, when your states leaders refuse to acknowledge climate warming, sea level rise, and man made environmental damage. You put your city in hurricane and flood alley, didn't build the infrastructure for it..... and so I say too bad 4 you.

quote:

So it's Mother Nature at fault rather than the fossil fuel company felons who you're mad at? I'd suggest sending Mother Nature a very stern letter then. Funny how Qwakkkos are enamored with fictional characters to fill their ridiculous fantasies. All foxed up.

quote:

Sounds like this mayor should have a long talk with the Qwakkko trumpuppet legislators from Louisiana. Maybe they'll begin the move from fossil fuelers' fantasy to reality.

quote:

Sounds like socialism to me. Magic of the Free Market, Louisiana, don’t ask for the Heavy Hand of Government!

quote:

Maybe it's time to close up and move elsewhere. The Government is not and should not be responsible for rebuilding a decaying city constantly battered by weather.

Another Southern town looking for handouts.

quote:

Or, how about this? States that are fossil fuel producers stop denying climate change and join everyone else in trying to combat it?

quote:

I'll say they're hardworking. They're probably not doing much about the environment. Way behind the rest of the country on COVID vaccines. Expected to underwater by the middle of this century. I think it's time to stop sending tax dollars that way and set-up a plan for moving.

quote:

Hizzoner's political affiliation is not clear in the late charles home page. Very high probability that he is Republican. In that case, sorry no sympathy. Your party has systematically denied climate change and actively resisted any efforts to mitigate it.

quote:

I thought folks in La believed in small government and pulling together as a community and hard work and prayer. Give all that a try instead of asking your vaccinated, educated, tax paying countrymen (that you disparage and despise) for help.

quote:

Looking at the photo above, see how the structures are built up on stilts. That method of avoiding a rising tide no longer works.

A whole new approach is needed. The federal government should offer financial aide instead of money to rebuild, to residents and businesses to relocate--out away from this area. And have them sign a contract that they can't take the money and come back a year later.

It's beyond clear that Mother Nature is going to keep venting her frustrations on this area.

quote:

Mayor Hunter, I want to feel for your citizens. I really do. But you are a Republican in one of the reddest states. Republicans state that the climate change that is causing your repeated problem is a hoax. Republicans say they are the champion of the working class, but they consistently oppose programs to help the poor and middle class. Poor and working class Republicans consistently bite off their noses to spite their face. My suggestion is that you change parties and encourage your citizens to do the same. Then start voting for the party that actually supports programs that you need. See today's WaPo analysis of the benefits of the child tax credit to rural communities for more information about how Republicans vote against their own interests.

quote:

Maybe the wise thing to do with a flood prone area such as Lake Charles is to ABANDON it. Especially true if global warming is going to lead to sea-level rise. The cost to protect it with levees, etc. and to maintain the same would be far more than the real estate is worth. Especially now since that real estate is severely damaged.

quote:

Stop bailing out people who live in flood plains and get flooded every few years because they are too stupid to live somewhere else. By this guy's own testimony, the city should be moved somewhere else.

quote:

Time to leave the area. What kind of message does it take. You can't live there anymore. The entire right-wing south is one big FEMA bottomless pit. Over and over again.
Now go and vote for someone who is a cheap huckster with an orange face, gunk smeared in hair, and bone spurs. Make it your God, like their Senator Kennedy has. "Do you believe in Trump, hum, I mean god, son".
Hey, its almost time for the Christmas culture wars to begin on FOX entertainment. Get the popcorn ready.

We should do the prosperous blue states a favor, and stop being a drain to them. Let’s see how the prosperous blue states do without red state natural resources. Let’s see how prosperous they are after a few years of doing without that which makes them prosperous.

Nothing to change. But the truth doesn't get headlines, likes or shares. It's why this country is in the shape it's in now.

Yeah it’s fricking disgusting what they are saying. It also resembles a lot of the comments about the California wildfires. Not all, a lot talk about how they could actually manage the forest and do things to protect themselves, but there are a lot of comments that mirror those.

The comments about claiming to want less government only to beg for federal government help are correct though. Which is it? Those are the sacrifices that come with lowering governments influence in your life. They won’t be your sugar daddy anymore.

The other comments were pretty ugly and ignorant. But it is hypocritical to chastise the federal government then go begging to it for help.

The far left (and right) are indeed hateful. But, I’d caution putting too much weight in random inter webs comment sections. It’s not a valid sample of the population.

Let it go.

But we don’t have less government. They were more than happy to take their taxes and now they deserve the services that are funded by those tax dollars.

A lot of less government people want less government social Programs and more government infrastructure spending. Think less taxes for social security, Medicaid, etc and more spending in flood prevention, interstate and bridge maintenance and upgrades
