He has dual citizenship.

He can choose to represent whichever country he wants to. To be fair the U.S. doesn't really help track athletes...

IT appears he’s chosen to represent Sweden. To be fair I’m not sure how being “cap tied” works in track and field, but in other sports you can’t compete on the international stage for one country and then flip to another

Except maybe because he’s pretty fricking smart and values an education.

Because you can only go to college at age 18. It’s not like Athletics has a limited window to make straight cash homey.

As a citizen of both the United States and Sweden, Duplantis could have chosen to vault for either country internationally; in June 2015 it was announced that he had selected Sweden

Good for him.

ETA: Good choice though.

A) USATF is one of the biggest jokes of an organization and doesn’t take care of their athletes

B) Easier path to the Olympic s/World Champs. A bad day in Sweden is less likely to cost him like a bad day in the states

C) Swedish poon

Ding, ding. He's guaranteed a spot on the Swedish Olympic Team based on his body of work. In the USA even if you are obviously the best you still have to qualify in the trials. If you are sick or slightly injured and have a bad day at the trials, you are out.
