WAFB

quote:

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A new battle over Louisiana’s budget is brewing after the Revenue Estimating Conference (REC) did not recognize a revenue surplus projected by the state’s top economists Monday.

Heaven forbid they don't factor in dollars that aren't even realized yet. That's why there is always a huge deficit. Politicians structure budgets based on theoretical dollars and not dollars they have. Imagine a common citizen planning their budget around a bonus that may or may not come.

quote:

Senate President John Alario, R-Westwego, says the Senate agreed to make $43 million in cuts with the understanding that any surplus money would be added back into the budget to fund things like pay raises for corrections officers and investment in local jails.

quote:

The economists are projecting a surplus of around $130 million this year, and more money next year, thanks to better than expected income and severance tax collections. The REC must be unanimous when it adopts a revenue estimate.

This is why you say no to taxes. If this ends actually ends up being the surplus amount, all that doom and gloom that they push about how if they don't raise more revenue cuts to the poor and dying will have to be implemented. No extra taxes were raised and no cuts were made and wahlah $130 million extra!

How about building a loop around BR or restoring our coasts with that money? Give our teachers raises? Etc?

There's a lot of public works shite to be done, there is no surplus. They're just not spending money that needs to be spent.

I don't disagree with your premise, but this is a blip pm the radar from a revenue standpoint.

Your overall point about taxes is solid though. All the doom and gloom, and instead the money goes to raising wages for government employees.

Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t the state constitution require them to be 100% allocated financially?

That’s why this is such a big deal. OP point stands, we shouldn’t be raising taxes.

They do. Way too many people do this and that's one of the biggest problems in this country. It gets a lot of people into a lot of trouble.

It's $130 million, that ain't that much. There's 47,000 public school teachers in the state. Without going to any support staff, admin, etc it would be a one time bonus of like 2k after taxes. While very nice, don't act like the state just has some abhorrent amount of money laying around.

So, we have a surplus. That's good. The issue is that the REC can't agree on exactly what the surplus will likely be in time, so certain cuts won't get reimbursed, for lack of a better word. Do I understand that right?

I mean. Is it lost money? Can we not take that, couple with any surplus next year, and hit some massive project like road construction/rebuilding? Raises for teachers at that point? I get that it's possible money we don't get to use for the year, but what's the crisis in not spending every penny right now?

I just don't see the negative in constructing a surplus in the budget.

They would make a movie out of it. The common citizen would put in a pool after inventing a coating for cereral that prevents it from going soggy in milk.

As an aside, in the movie, a cat would chew on Christmas Tree lights and die.

At least it only takes 1 of the 4 members to have veto power.
Was it political posturing by Henry/Barras? Sure.
Just as it was for the other 3 stooges to go crying to the media about how the world was gonna end because of this outlandish behavior. AGAIN!

For a change, the taxpayers won this one.
But JBE's propaganda machine is cranking up for an election season.

perhaps put up a quick resume breakdown of each, and most likely tell you why.

Most politicians arent the best, and brightest of our society.

If we end the year with a surplus, there are limited ways to use that money. Pay down debt in retirement systems, certain other one-time expenses, etc.

It's a political problem. The budget deal they made had a handshake that said if additional money was found, it would be used to restore certain cuts. Looks like some of the politicians are reneging on that deal.
