The effort to legalize marijuana for recreational use in Louisiana, which got further than ever before this year after an unexpected bipartisan push, is over for now. State Rep. Richard Nelson’s bill to tax the sale of marijuana died on a 47-48 vote Tuesday, well short of the 70 votes needed. After that bill failed, he tabled a vote on the bill to legalize the drug for recreational use. The influential Louisiana Sheriffs Association helped kill the proposal, but the debate also revealed shifting attitudes about legalization among Republicans and opponents of the idea. The sheriffs’ group committed to study the idea ahead of next year’s legislative session, and several opponents conceded legalization is likely inevitable as the idea was debated by lawmakers
"To study the idea...". Let me translate this. LSA is going to hold this vote hostage until they get a commitment that a majority of the tax dollars from legalization go to the Sheriffs to offset the prisoner money they would be getting for throwing non violent marijuana prisoners in their jails. It's just that simple. They don't want the money going to roads, hospitals or schools. They want it for themselves.

They're full of shite and they know it. The chance is gone for a few years after this fiasco. Next year's session will be more focused on taxes and law legislation will be very limited. The year after that is an election year and few lawmakers will be willing to rock the boat... even less than they already are.
LA lawmakers ought to be embarrassed and ashamed, but we all know feeling shame is not something those assholes are capable of.

Fontenot has definitely been paid by the Sheriff's Association.
He is a former cop. His dad and brother are/were both cops. He definitely will side with his buddy Sherriff Craig Webre.

The LA legislature continues to be the absolute worst deliberative body in the developed world. I don’t understand how anyone could respect or vote for anyone in it. They are a net drain on the state.

Did you smelly potheads get your way or not?

Just glad that the Louisiana Legislature has once again voted to preserve my morality rather than create a new revenue stream. Thanks, Representatives.

Why create additional revenue possibilities when you can just hike income and corporate taxes?
What could possibly go wrong?

70% of Louisiana residents think we should leagalize. I guess being a representative means doing what you personally believe is right.

That or whoever pads your pockets the most. Fontenot made it plain as day publicly what this is really all about. I wish more people had watched that debate. In fact if you do want to see it, here it is - LINK . Fontenot starts spewing his bullshite about 1:18:45. His very first question is something along the lines of "Did you consult with the Sheriff's Association to see if 20% is a fair number?"
Gotta give it to them... the Sheriff's Association knows how to protect their turf.

When you elect someone named “Big John” to a legislative seat, you pretty much know what you’re going to get.

I know Fontenot doesn't care about what the public thinks, but that a-hole should be being lit up today.

So we are deciding laws based on how much our law enforcement makes off of arresting people? That's insanely fricked up.
I wondered why the Sheriff was lobbying for laws.

Anyone got a response yet from these spineless twats? It would do 0 good to email or call my rep. Sherman Mack is an avowed reefer madness promoter and even tried to torpedo a bill to lower criminal penalties for simple possession in this session.

Well if there was any remaining doubt that the opposition from the Sheriffs’ Association was tied to money, this should clear things up.

“Your comments and concerns have been forwarded to Rep. Wheat” is what I got. We will see, not that it matters now
as noted a few posts above next year for this to be considered again there will have to be a special session. The year after that is an election year...
I’m not a political junkie but I am an employer and a business owner.
That fricker is going to hear from me as often as I can make time to do so
