My DL is up for renewal in a couple of months. I am unable to renew online, or by mail, because my last renewal was online. I had to renew in person at the DMV.

The DMV office in Chalmette is now (due to COVID) appointment only. A couple of weeks ago I went online to make an appointment. There was nothing available in about a 2 week window, so I made an appointment for this morning at 8:50 am.

Got there at 8:45. Was let in the door and asked if I had an appointment, they had my name n a paper list. I Was directed to a station. Told the lady I needed to renew my DL. She asked for my current one and proof of insurance. I had to do a quick eye test. Paid my fee (about $37 if using a card). Walked over and had my picture taken.

Sat and waited a couple of min for my DL to print. Called up when it did and handed to me to check, it was all good. Said thanks and walked out the door.

From the time I walked in the door until the time I walked out: 10 minutes exactly.

That might be the easiest and most pleasant experience I've had with the state of Louisiana government, well, my entire life.

Maybe this is a COVID protocol change that is actually for the better, and I kinda hope it sticks around. Especially for things like renewals where booking an appointment a coupole of weeks in advance is no big deal.

I was at the one in Mandeville a few months ago, and it was the same set-up. God help you though if you try to get in there without an appointment; I thought the bouncer/check-in lady at the door was about to throw some people down and kick their arse.

Way before the pandemic, I had a similar experience at the express DMV in Rivertown/Kenner. I couldn't believe how fast and pleasant the experience was.

What's sad is that we are all gushing over the one thing the government got right. We should be on here bitching about the ONE THING they are getting wrong. All my tax dollars and they do shite work.

I have it. Was still not eligible to renew online.

But... forgot to add to OP... when I got in my car to leave, I opened up LA Wallet and there as notification asking if I wanted the app to download my updated license.

LA DMV used to be horrific. Awful.

If they can get better, there is hope for the rest of state government.

I'm curious how the DMV did it. Good leadership? Did they tell the employees to step up or step out? Raise their pay? Are they not part of civil service?

I do like this process better, but my last experience was not so pleasant. However, that is only because they fricked me. Wasn't expecting to spend 800 just to get a new trailer registered and plated.

Did you get the Real ID DL? I had to renew mine last year, and had to upgrade to the Real ID. I had to get a copy of my birth certificate, as well as get a new SS card (I lost mine back in about 1980). I also needed a couple of bills showing my current address. That was the biggest pain in the arse part. I went to the Express office on Perkins and Siegen and didn't really have to wait very long. It probably took me about 20-30 minutes, but it wasn't bad.

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT!

I had to renew mine a couple months ago, and I made an appointment online. I still tried to go first thing in the morning to see if I could knock it out quickly, but 15 minutes before it opened there was already a line outside with 14 people in it. So I decided to trust in the appointment system. I went in and signed in, and the room was absolutely packed. I believe there were 25+ people there. There was a screen on the wall showing names (a virtual line I guess), and my name wasn't on it. So after about five minutes of sitting there I decided to go ask the lady closest to the front desk if I had done it correctly and if it mattered if I had an appointment or not. She asked me my name and said I would be seen very soon. Then I sat back down and noticed my name had crept onto the virtual line. Then about a minute later it was at the top. And the next time someone got up from a desk, my name was called.

This was at the Express OMV in Baton Rouge (Siegen and Perkins). All told I was in and out of there in about 20 minutes total. I was very happy.

Note: I did pay a premium for the service though, as they charge for renewals there as opposed to just going to the normal OMV. It was around $20, which is a fricking ton. But I figured it was worth the $20 to not have to sit at the real OMV for hours.

I did not. I have a passport so if they ever start actually requiring Real ID to fly / enter buildings, I'll just use my passport.

I may go back later and do it if I need to.

The DMV office

Who goes to the DMV office any more? Most of the vehicle title companies can renew driver's licenses now. You walk in and out in just a few minutes. I renewed mine a year or so ago after it had expired.

I don't think the title office would be any faster, and it is more expensive.

Renewed mine online last year. It is about time Louisiana is coming out of the stone age. This has been the case in Florida for years that you could make an appointment.
