I am willing to bet they just aren’t paying the OT or getting more officers to push the one route narrative.

If this parade is too much for NOPD to handle, how in the ever loving frick would they be able to handle Mardi Gras?

Of all the reasons New Orleans residents should have been outraged over the past few decades, shortening a parade route is the straw that broke the camel’s back. The same cop shortage has led to many other issues in the city without much hubbub but a shorter parade and possibly requiring other krewes to change their routes is a bridge too far!!!

Meanwhile, car jackings all over the city, robberies and assaults and not a peep from the residents about the increase in crime.

This is the real reason that Jazzfest was cancelled. I’ve heard there are only around 700 officers not counting the almost 150-175 who are out of action due to health/injuries. This really something the local media hasn’t discussed.

They have but it’s only been mentioned once or twice a week. Raphael Gounichi (sp) has been hammering this issue everytime he’s on WWL Radio for months. But you’re right, the media and people running for mayor or at large won’t bring it up

It’s no doubt the #1 issue nola has right now as in why crime is out of control.

Its all about covid monitoring. It has nothing to do with police shortages. They want an easy path to get all the faces seen breaking protocol.

There are DEFINITELY police shortages don't get me wrong. They could put this together tonight if they wanted to

Also they don’t have enough police to police a parade going less than 6-8 blocks on Canal but they can police the Quarter for Mardi Gras?

Or will Teedy shut down Bourbon St?

There’s the big problem - there is no local media. The death of local print media in cities across the country is the silent killer. New Orleans has a daily local paper in name only and TV news channels just aren’t structured to investigate news stories.

The impacts really are incredible. People still consume news but without local reporting everyone is pushed into a national news ecosystem causing local politicians to run for local office on a platform of national issues.

The number of NOPD officers has shrunk 24% since 2010. The latest recruiting class in over a year only has 14 people in it right now. They lost 96 officers in 2020 and have lost another 125 in 2021.

Just using the Uptown route

Before I moved to Old Metairie, I lived on Cadiz St. 2 blocks from Napoleon. A couple of years Endymion got rained out and moved to the Uptown route. It was awful, the crowd was almost unmanageable.
