TMZ is a piece of shite organization.

Kobe's family found out through social media and TV that their husband, father, sister and daughter died in a helicopter crash before the Sheriff's Office could tell them in person.

What’s the solution here? If not TMZ someone would have. The news job is to report the news accurately and as soon as possible. It’s not their job to be slower then the police. I hear you but I don’t think there’s a very good solution to this other then the police should move swiftly.

Is r saying that he flew through a cloud, clipped a mountain, then hard impact bc pilot didn’t use instruments?

Their altitude and speed were all over the place. They climbed really rapidly, which makes me think they went into a cloud? And then the quick drop immediately after.

I think its pretty clear that this will be pilot error due to the weather. As said in that thread he was visually flying even in cloud cover instead of relying on his instruments. From what I understand that is usually the cause of bad weather crashes like this.

I apologize if already posted but I was flying when this whole story broke and once we landed everyone on the plane started talking about this tragic accident

Once we deplaned and got out the gate apparently there’s a video of the crash floating around? I only saw a short second of it? Is that true that there’s a video of the crash? Wouldn’t they be able to tell if the weather was a factor?

At least they didn't feel anything. Jesus Christ that thing was falling like a rock.

Wouldn’t they feel the falling feeling?? Dear Lord I can’t imagine what all of those people went through and now what their families are going through.

The media has at times exercised some discretion and held off on reporting things until family has been notified. The problem is there’s always trash news organizations the just want to be the first to report something.

I know you already know this, but police notifying family is often pretty far down the priority list when responding to tragedies.

Don't think too much. You might hurt your small brain.

You realize Kobe has heirs (wife and surviving kids) who are going to receive his assets. If he didn't properly protect his assets or have a very large insurance policy, there's going to be some very large lawsuits.

This was a transport category aircraft so it would have been required by FAA regs to have a cockpit voice recorder installed. Whether or not they can get any info from it remains to be seen. Also an aircraft like this would have top of the line avionics with GPS moving map with terrain and obstacle info displayed on a screen and probably also equipped with HTAWS ( Helicopter Terrain Awareness and Warning System)
an on-board system aimed at preventing unintentional impacts with the ground, termed "controlled flight into terrain" accidents, or CFIT. And possibly a ground proximity warning system to boot. All of this is useless if you go scud running in marginal vfr or special vfr conditions with hilly terrain. Get behind in a complex fast moving aircraft and the results are bad.

You really think there's a problem here?

Nobody gives a shite about TMZ's desire to be the first to break the story, especially not when there is a human cost to doing so.

If I were the reporter or editor, I would've held the story back until I knew for a fact that the family was notified first.

This is another example of why people hate the media.

Not when there is a human and ethical cost to doing so.

I mean what if his wife is on their private yacht in the Mediterranean Sea? Or at the hunting camp with no cell service?

Calling one business a shitty business because they are better at their job then someone else seems absurd to me.

Sites like TMZ rely on clicks to survive and being known to break big stories.

If they wait someone else will scoop them and they are out.

Ok thanks. I’m just getting caught up on a lot of things and this really hit me hard as I’m trying to figure out what’s what.

This was Bryant’s famed “Mamba Chopper,” according to an April 2016 Getty Images photo that shows Bryant next to the helicopter whose tail number matches that of the helicopter that crashed Sunday. Government records show the helicopter was owned by Island Express Holding Corp., a helicopter flight charter business.

But Bryant could have been leasing it or had some other kind of arrangement for his personal use. The photo shows the Black Mamba logo on the helicopter, a brand and reference to his nickname.

The top of the mountain impact theory would seem to be supported by their altitude detail. A fast ascent when the warnings went off followed by a fast and immediate descent after they clipped the top and went down into the canyon.

But it's a helicopter so you would think they could pretty quickly stop their forward momentum.

But they aren’t, they are just so morally bankrupt that they put reporting the news first above all else.

Again, some reputable news outlets know when to rush to report a story and when to exercise discretion.
