They are nameless faceless people. Thousands of people die everyday and it doesn’t bother us.

Bryant dying doesn't bother me.

Continually amazed at the number of people that put someone on a pedestal because they can throw a ball. Football, basketball, baseball, soccer ball, whatever.

Same with "movie stars".

In the past acting was considered a shite profession, practiced by the lower end of society.

They were right.

But seriously, it blows my mind that that is the first thing that crosses people's mind. And if that is the first thing that comes to mind immediately after receiving the news a loved one died has to be psychopathic to some degree.

While grief & sadness are a given, the sad realty is that for many it is also coupled with worry bc they don't have the money & can't afford a loan to give their loved one a proper burial. No, money doesn't make it less sadder but it sure does eliminate some huge problems you'd have without it.

Sports, movies, etc are all an escape for people. Sports are also something people can feel they are a part of through supporting teams. It's not hard to see why people prop athletes up.

I get your premise and agree that just because someone is an athlete or actor we shouldn't value their opinion more or less than others but it's not hard to see how someone can idolize a sports icon like Kobe and be sad at his passing.

Only Bryant's....

Use some common sense before making these statements. I saw someone tweet "all of this attention on Kobe's death, but where was this attention when two servicemen died last week in Iraq..."..

Kobe has been in the public eye since the late 90s.

It would be like if a loved one died and you were obviously upset and someone would come up to say "oh well why are you more upset about your loved one's death than you are about the Americans killed overseas"... Well.. First of all, you didn't personally know the Americans killed overseas..

I am not saying everyone knew Kobe personally, but people grew up watching him play. He was one of the best to play basketball.

If there was a helicopter crash in which people not known in the public eye died then all of a sudden the news reported "John Smith, 48 died in a helicopter crash earlier today. Smith became a mechanic as soon as he graduated high school and when he was 26 years old he opened up his own mechanic shop. He did great work, but we interviewed some of his customers who say they didn't know him personally, but although he shop was known for having higher prices, it was well worth it because of the great work that his shop did......" Is it going to be a story of interest? No.. Because people didn't watch him work on vehicles and he wasn't one of the best ever mechanics..

The wow came from the guy that recorded his TV and put it on Youtube.

It's like you think you are really philosophical and making a great point but it reads like deep thoughts written by a 12-year-old

9 people? 5 were on the helicopter right?

So 4 on the ground?

I believe the sheriff said the flight manifest had 9 people listed.

don't know what kind of helicopter it was for sure but if it was an S-76, I think someone mentioned that, that's a decent sized chopper, PHI used to, maybe still does, use it for crew changes out to the rigs and back, plus other potential vics could have been on the ground?
