I was squatting in the gym on Thursday late morning, and injured my right knee. I was not maxing out or lifting super heavy, it was about 70% of my max for reps. On my third rep as I was lifting up, I heard and felt a pop in my right knee. I racked the weights and was able to walk around with a little pain and discomfort. I left the gym and went home to ice and rest. The pain is located on the outer side of my right knee(I looked at a knee diagram online, and it could possibly be an LCL or in that region). I have managed to move around walking with a stiff right leg without bending it and continued to ice and rest as much as possible. Last night and this morning the original injury seems to be slightly improving, but now I have a lot of pain behind my knee and in the very upper part of my calf area and it is more difficult to walk now. It is like the pain has shifted to a different area and intensified.

My question is should I just wait until Monday and make an appointment with a knee specialist and continue hobbling around, or could there possibly be something serious that I need to get checked out now?

Thank you for any help or advice.

My experience with knee injuries is to get them checked out as soon as possible. In this case, Monday seems alright. I screwed around with one for a while and 2 years later it still bugs me from time to time. Ive become a strong supporter of PT in my old age.

If you don't go to a doc this weekend, Id go find a really good brace (not a sleeve) and at least support it with that. Google LCL braces if you think thats it.

Good luck.

If you have something screwed, the urgent care or ER docs won't be able to do anything. I would try to stay off it over the weekend and schedule to see a specialist next week.

Not medical advice, just my opinion.

As a certified OT vet, I recommend amputation.

shite in your knees isn't supposed to pop friend, that alone should tell you you need to go get an MRI.

If you had grinding or anything normal of the sort you'd obviously know, so it's not that. Additionally you can still get around with a lot of knee injuries, but shite won't fix itsself

Popping is not good. Son did that in pe class on the third day of school playing basketball. It was hurting badly and this child never complains. Went to the ortho and MRI showed torn meniscus. Had a scope o clean it out two weeks later over Labor Day break and he's good as new. Ran cross country last fall and was back to tennis full speed in October maybe?

Feeling and hearing a pop should not be ignored.

This is actually great advice. My mom just had a major knee injury and the only reason one should go to urgent care in this case, is if they need the pain meds or feel it may be a break.

The urgent care/ER can only x-ray it, they can't even give you a referral to a specialist, that has to come from your primary doctor. So if you need a MRI or a good x-ray, the ortho will have to do it.

If you need some good doctor's names in the BR area, pm me. Between my bball knee injury, my dad's knee replacement and this issue with my mom, we have plenty of ortho specialist knowledge lol.

ETA - nvm referrals, just saw where you're from.

DO NOT GO TO THE ER FOR THIS!

HUGE Waste of their time and your money if you can walk on it. See an Orthopedist or your Primary Care Provider next week. Ortho can evaluate and determine if you need an MRI or not and do the X-rays on that visit

Schedule directly to an ortho go see them ASAP. If you were using proper form it is highly unlikely you injured your LCL during a squat. In fact, moving from deep flexion to extension there is a lot more stressed placed on your MCL. This is all of course if using the correct form.

Also, a pop usually means something was torn unless it was a minor patellar dislocation that reduced itself. A torn LCL would leave your knee feeling pretty unstable.

Go to an ortho, skip the ER and get the requisite imagining done.

Agree with other advice to wait and get the right audience.

Let's talk about your squat form. Knees caving in? Toes pointed too far out? Bouncing out of the hole?

I hope all is well and you just need some rest and tissue work

Sounds like water under the knee. Walk it off.

Ice and rest. After a week if still hurts or feels unstable go to orthopedist. otherwise you'll pay the ER or urgent care to tell you to ice and rest and see ortho.

Thank you for all of the advice. For sure I will be making an appointment to see an ortho. I live in Gulf Breeze, FL and we have an Andrews Institute across from my work. Lots of pro athletes pass through so I know its a great spot. My form is usually good but on this occasion all of the cages were taken so I was using a rack I don't normally use plus it doesn't have a mirror in front of it. I can usually keep an eye on my knees and form from the front view this way. I'm by no means a powerlifting expert and have really only been doing squats on and off for a year. I try to keep a shoulder width stance, possibly slightly wider, and toes pointed out to a slight degree. I have caught my knees creeping in before and always correct it. It's very possible my form was the cause. What is the ideal stance and angle at which the toes should be pointed?

That mechanism won't cause LCL injury. Give it a week, I suspect things will be fine (everyone 'feels a pop').
