NEW ORLEANS -- There were significantly more killings in New Orleans during the first quarter of 2017 than the year before and fewer of them are being solved.
That was the information that Police Superintendent Michael Harrison delivered to a City Council committee Thursday.
Harrison, who spoke to the council’s Criminal Justice Committee, said there were 51 killings in the first quarter of 2017, compared to 30 in 2016. The clearance rate – the number of killings that have been solved by naming or arresting a suspect -- has dropped from nearly 41 percent to only 31 percent.
The clearance rate has been the subject of much scrutiny this year, and Harrison told the council the rate has been hampered by a shortage of people willing to come forward with information that can lead to arrests.
Harrison also said the numbers of officers on the force has gone up, but only slightly in the past year.
The NOPD hired 123 new recruits in 2016, but they lost 109 officers at the same time, a net increase of only 14 officers.

I'm afraid New Orleans, and the entire state of Louisiana, is in a tail spin right now.

I doubt they care enough to put any real effort into solving these cases.

Mitch Landrieu is the worst

I guess Mitch's "we're harboring illegals to help solve crimes in NOLA" plan is complete bullshite.

I guess it was easier for Mitch to rattle off the names of the 16 killed at the Liberty Place Battle than the 51 people killed in New Orleans this year.

Maybe we can get more episodes of First 48 filmed in New Orleans now.

They don't care at all about solving the cases as most of the homicide unit wants to be transferred out of it. There is no support or resources and then the NOPD has to work with the worst of the worst the New Orleans DAs office.
PS the NOPD numbers are less than the numbers he quoted the council because they don't include the 2 NOPD officers who were indicted and kicked off the force yesterday. Net increase of only 12 not 14. Anyone else notice they never ask how many NOPD officers are out on injured status, reserve status, or placed on administrative leave?
Murder is up 71%
Shootings up 38%
Murders solved is less than 20%

At least the BR Metro Council will attempt to keep Broome in check
What was the NO Council's vote on the statues, 6-1 ??

Just assemble the National Guard in the couple hot spots around the city and boom problem solved. Everyone knows where the murders occur but nobody cares.

The killers will likely be victims themselves in a few weeks. Let the streets sort it out.

Now that the statues are gone, we should see an immediate decrease in crime rate.

175 murders in 2016 resulted in 31 actual arrests.

Need to have a purge in NOLA only. Would be epic

I blame it on the homicide department getting famous and complacent due to a&e's first 48 show.
