I operate under the thought that 99.99 percent of established, well thought of dentists, with an assitant in the room are not going to diddle my kid.

Many kids do way better without parents present. Like another poster said, they'll act up so the parents will "save" them. Or sometimes the parents are nervous and kids sense that. That anxiety is contagious, and an otherwise calm kid is now freaking out too.
Sounds like the OP was calm and trusted the professionals to take care of his kid. Probably no coincidence his daughter was calm, trusted the professionals, and her treatment went relatively well.
$10 says at least one of the two the kids of the helicopter moms who left to find another dentist will have problems will dental anxiety - maybe even for life. Probably no coincidence their moms car crazy Karens.

You need to make your kid brush her teeth. Unacceptable for a kid this age to have cavities. You are teaching poor hygiene and bad habits.

should I have been back there?

you should have used that time to go get a toothbrush and some floss for your kid.

Weird putting fillings in baby teeth.

It is weird for a child to have cavities, they are not brushing properly and need to learn for later in the life

As for the fillings, it is normal if a kid has cavalries to fill them. For 2 reasons, to potential prevent any pain and also to protect the adult underneath from getting harmed

Absolutely normal. The vast majority don't have parents in the rooms and it allows the treatment to go so much smoother for the child and the dentist.

This sounds like a load of bullshite. Gatorade rotting baby teeth? Crowning baby teeth?

We see it all of the time. Child protective services should have been called.

Our dentist asked my wife if she wanted to be in the room to fill my daughter's cavity. Then when my wife was back there, they asked my daughter if she wanted to sit in the chair herself or my wife's lap. She chose my wife's lap, and other than trying to watch them do the filing, there were no issues at all.

Is needing two fillings at 5 years old normal??

That really depends. Some kids have really bad genetics and will have issues with their teeth. Also, if they do pacifiers, what hygiene steps are they taking before the kid sleeps with it in their mouths for 8-12 hours?

It also depends on where the cavity is. My daughter's cavity was on her front tooth at the base of the gum line. We figured it was a combo of her not opening wide enough when we brush, and we just weren't hitting the area enough; and her not catching it when she insists on doing her teeth herself.

some kids just have crap teeth.

God knows mine don’t brush it floss nearly as well as they should, or have been taught. Yet never a cavity.

as someone who shares a bed with dentist, this is pretty accurate. it goes w/out saying that all kids are different. generally, dental anxiety is learned from parents and or siblings.

some people don’t want their kids being alone with adults they don’t really trust.

it’s a scary world.

I thought about this and just asked a few co-workers this question, none of us remember our parents being the in the room for any dentist visits when we were kids, at least to point of having a memory of going to the dentist.

It was actually a big deal to get 3 kids to the dentist, and a bit of character building for us. We did get to go to McDonalds after if we all did well, which was a real treat because we rarely ate fast food.
