A friend of mine got paid(auto deposit). Seems that company paid him twice. He reported it to payroll, she told him she would check it out. She called him couple days later and said she did not find anything. You keep it or give it back?

Give it back. It will eventually be discovered.

He gave them a shot and they passed.

If he’s concerned, invest the money, and if they ever come back around for it he can give it back and keep what he’s made off it.

Does not matter...if they realize the mistake, they will demand and will get that money back.

Looks to me like he tried. What more can he do? He reported it, they investigated and said they didn't find anything.

Give it back.

I did that once on a part time job. A couple of years later the boss remembered it (I'd long since forgotten).

Save it for when they realize the error. It happened to me before. I just held it aside, they eventually came back for it.

Send them an email confirming the conversation.

Don’t do anything until you get a response.

One week’s pay is not enough to go over Fool Hill about.

They’ll eventually figure out the error and will ask for it back.

This

And you shouldn't have to give the money back. It should be handled via payroll deduction from future checks.

He already took the initiative to inform them of the mistake. It's not his job to pay it back.

At my college job I forgot to clock out over the weekend once. Told my boss and he said he'd fix it but apparently he didn't because I had about 40 hours of overtime on my next check. Told the owner pretty much immediately and he ended up letting me keep it for being honest.

Unless the company doesnt have a good auditing system, it will get caught, it almost always does

It doesen’t matter if they eventually find out or not. If you know it was a mistake you need to give it back. Its just the right thing to do.
