At last month's Katy ISD Board meeting, a new policy changing the Academic Achievement Class Ranking and district grading policy was approved. The change removes the letter "D" from the grading scale and also makes changes to class rankings.

So what does this even mean? Are they going to call it something else? Does an "F" grade now start at a higher numerical grade? Are they expanding what numerical grades get an A, B, or C?

They are also only going to assign a single class rank to students in top 10%, everyone else will get a quartile rank (Top 25%, 50%, 75%). I don't think this matters much, as the only thing that really matters is top 10%.

Any of our many Katy residents know what is going on with the "no D" thing?

Update: What was once a "D" will now be a "C".

District officials instated a D letter grade will be replaced as a C- letter grade.

So I'm guessing the C grade scale will now go from 70-79.

If getting a D makes you fail the class, then it is as good as an F. I'm fine with Katy ISD doing this. Makes sense to me.

I guess it makes sense

if anything below "C" is failing, why even have a "D" grade?

D and F are the same thing anyway.

That's what I am wondering.

Used to be:

90-100 A
80-89 B
75-79 C
70-74 D
Below 70 F

So is C now 70-79? Or does C stay the same, and F now is below 75?

I mean, what is a “D?” You either know the material enough to get a passing grade, which is at minimum a “C,” or you failed. A “D” is meaningless.

There' s no way C absorbed D. I think F absorbed D.

F is 0-74

If that's the case, and a passing grade was raised from 70 to 75, I'd be very impressed.

That would also go against the grain in how schools are run these days, where it seems like schools everywhere are dumbing down standards and making it easier for people to pass.

A D grade earns you credit for the course.
