new police chief

Here's a man who set aside his personal revulsion for dealing with a group of terrorists to protect all the citizens of his town.

Well done.

I wonder what kind of BLM population you have up there.

1%. Lots of natives though, which is not very different.

I mean, if you're a police chief in specific areas, it seems almost like a good idea to reach out and try to have an event like this right about now, try to be proactive about things.

In addition, Alaska recently passed and signed off on a law reforming the CJ system. Most non violent crimes including drug possession will not include jail time now.

I love how when police try to do something nice, they still get shite. This proves that with some people, they are beyond redemption. If you don't welcome change, you will never receive it. I'm glad the people at the BBQ don't feel the same way you do.

Whether it should or shouldn't is irrelevant, seems pretty obvious that it actually is necessary.

Again, unless you think everything is perfectly fine and couldn't get any better, despite protestors saying all the vile things they're saying and cops being targeted and ambushed...

You're missing the point. For there to be a dialogue it requires two parties to be equally interested in having the discussion. What the Wichita PD did is awesome and it may go a long way but I think it's ridiculous that more tax payer money will go towards chicken and baked beans to try to appease a movement that shouldn't even be fricking thing to begin with. The idiots that are protesting are already costing the city they're in more money by having to have every fricking officer on duty to make sure they don't get out of control.

Yeah whether it's necessary to you doesn't matter. LEOs have a significant PR deficit with a significant portion of this country. BLM is a horrible movement, but there are many people who have nothing to do with BLM and still don't trust a cop as far as they can throw them.

Until LEO can look in the mirror and believe they're perfect, they should continue to strive to be better.

Ignoring the "problem", whether you believe it exists or not, is obviously not working.

Sometimes you have to start with being friendly. It opens the line for communication. When you're yelling and cussing at someone, good luck having a effective discussion.

This is not going to be something that is fixed overnight. I believe you have to start with being friendly with each other. You can't expect everything to be solved in this one protest.

It's really time to get back to community based policing.

Considering I love what they did, that would insinuate that I fully understand that, quite the opposite of what you said.

Speaking of missing the point, that is all irrelevant to the task at hand. We can't undo that, so there's no point in complaining about how it shouldn't have to be like this, that doesn't help at all.

I'm ok with community outreach like this one. It shows that people on both sides aren't what the extremist on both sides make them out to be.

But this "dialogue" never has any description to it. It's always vague. "We just need open dialogue". Okay, about what?

One side feels the other is out to get them at every turn. The other feels that simply isn't true.

The people who want legitimate "peace" between the two groups, don't need dialogue. They simply need actions such as this one to quash the notion that what the extremist on both sides is true.

I'll bet most of the food items were donated. That's how it was done locally, no expense to the PD

You missed my point. My response was in response to someone saying that the police are just telling them to comply and that was the message. I am with you. I believe the message in this case was much more positive.

Man, I bet in a lot of cases, that may be enough.

If both sides see each other as people just trying to live life and seeing them as "the enemy" or "thugs" isn't that a huge, positive step?

Dialogue, ongoing, and action addressing the second paragraph. It does start with open two way communication with both sides listening. I am sorry that many here don't think That what occurred in KS is a good thing.

It certainly is.

I just cringe when I hear things like "We need open dialogue". It sounds the same as the argument for gun violence:

- "We need to stop gun violence!"
- Okay, how do we do that?
- "I don't know, but we need to stop it!"

The "we need dialogue" saying is just a "feel good" statement. There's no dialogue to be had. We simply need to see each other for who we are: fellow citizens and human beings. When people see that, their perception changes. No dialogue necessary.
