i really think in (or outside of) a college town in the Appalachian range is the best place to live these days. you can go from north alabama to maine, so there is plenty of climate & political diversity, depending on what you're looking for

A geology prof at VPI told us that Burkes Garden was heaven on earth and he really had seen almost every hill in the southern Appalachians.
He died of a heart attack before he could retire there. The valley it opens up to (to the north) is one fo the prettiest valleys with fairly good soil and views that go for miles.

Speaking of this part of the world: read about the Over Mountain Men and if you get the urge try to join one of the trek groups that do that journey in memory of history.

Must have been after Brevard transitioned to a 4 year school. It was only 2 years when I went there.

Also, the scenery is unmatched. Especially this time of year when fall color is at peak. That entire section of NC has the highest average elevation in the Eastern US.

Mt. Mitchell is the highest peak east of the Mississippi. Pretty much all of Western NC is beautiful. We have a weekend place in Bat Cave, which is just a couple minutes from Lake Lure and Chimney Rock. 25 minutes to Asheville, 20 minutes to Hendersonville and 20 minutes to Black Mountain, great little spot. Also has a sizeable creek with a waterfall on the property.

We can't get out there enough, would spend every weekend out there if we could. That said, there is literally no broadband internet service available, so that's always a bit of a pain if we decide to try and work from there.

We've done most of the more popular Western, NC spots and it's really hard to go wrong. Best part of living in NC is that we have a place out at the beach as well. We live in Raleigh, so 3 hours east and we're at the beach for the weekend, 3 hours and 45 minutes and we're up in the mountains. Not many places can offer that.

Can you see any transmission towers from the property? If so, call Skyrunner in Asheville. They have changed the game in the area, but Elon will cover it soon enough anyway.

Apparently either Xfinity or Verizon is currently building out broadband and should be available in the next 6 months or so. Right now we use a Verizon business hotspot, which works surprisingly well and get something like 500gb of 5g data for under $100 / month. Not ideal, but it gets the job done.

Yup. I used the VZW hotspot for 15 years and found out that Skyrunner had been available to me for 10 of those. They don't advertise for whatever reasons. I can stream every tv in the house at he same time with no issues.

have a place in Cashiers. I'm about four years from spending at least 1/2 the year there.

During COVID I spent month at a time and loved it. Not everything is easy (finding workers to show up at the house), but the people ae great, the weather is amazing for the most part, and the hikes and fishing is awesome.

only downside is everything is more expensive up there.
