Just received the dreaded Notice of Proposed Property Taxes Yearly Letter

Oh Joy. I'm going to see how much my property value has increased and oh yeah you owe us more money now because of this. My property taxes have gone up 50% in the 10 years i've been here but i should be happy because my house is worth more. What good is that if i dont plan on selling? Probably added an Inflation tax this year as well.
Rant over.

The good thing in Texas is at least the taxes seem to stay in the community for the most part and you can see the results.
It’s does suck tho, in my case, with a paid for home but having to write a $15,000 check every year. It’s like I’m just renting my house from the government.

That’s pricier than a lot of mortgages I know of….

Now do property taxes in Texas.

They put it in me this year. Bigly.

I feel your pain. Ours came in last Friday. Ruined our Friday.
Im a positive person. The Taxing of everything has me ready for this Country and/or the World to end. It’s beyond frustrating.

Our property tax is actually going to go down a little thanks to the extra Homestead exemption credit I get for being 80% VA disabled.
Thank you Louisiana voters.

Rookie numbers. I have a $28,000 property tax bill on top of state income tax.

Correct. Not to be a doomer, but it seems like you never truly own anything in this country.
Maybe people maxing out debt limits up to their eyeballs with no intention of paying it back have the right idea. Why work towards a goal of a paid off house if they can just live in luxury beyond their means for awhile, tie it up in eviction/foreclosure proceedings that drag out for a couple more years, then bail.

I know in our northern Dallas burb it’s the case. I’ll put our facilities, parks and schools against anyone. Top of the line
They are opening a 60 million dollar, 150,000+ sq foot Rec center a mile from my house next month.
They opened a 45 million STEAM center that every school aged kid in the district goes to once a week for a class.

And Texas just passed a homestead law to increase your homestead exemption to 100k which will help taxes.

Except for the parks, roads, utilities, police/fire services, and schools that you get to use.

In my local part of north central Alabama my property tax assessment went up $60K in one year. A hospital is being built 6 miles from my address so possibly that’s the case. The government will get theirs for sure.

In Louisiana the notices go out at Christmas. Nice.

presumably you're complaining about taxes on your florida homestead property
under the save our homes act, the assessed value of your homestead for ad valorum tax purposes cannot increase by more than 3% OR the percentage change in the CPI, whichever is less, each year. if you purchased a home for $500,000 in 2013, didn't have a portable exemption from a prior homestead property, didn't make a single taxable improvement to the property (which are not exempted by the s.o.h. cap), and the assessed value increased by the maximum amount permitted by the s.o.h. cap each year, the assessed value of your home for TY2023 would be $594,598.05.
that's an ~19% in assessed value, meaning that absent major improvements (e.g., additions, major reno, swimming pool) it's incredibly unlikely you've experienced a 50% increase in ad valorum property taxes over the past decade. moreover, the market value of the home you purchased for $500k in 2013 is very likely well over $1MM.
imo, stop bitching about the relatively insignificant property taxes you're paying to support schools, roads, and municipal/county services in your community and be thankful that what is almost certainly your most valuable asset has appreciated wildly without you ever having to lift a finger. you don't even pay state income tax. chill.

I don’t own a house
But this seems like a huge scam
You rent your house from the bank essentially until it is paid off
Even WHEN it is paid off the government just comes in and is like “you owe us $10000 for living here”

no, you're paying for the benefit of sanitation services & infrastructure, public schools, law enforcement, fire department, libraries, building department & code enforcement, and a host of other services provided by municipal & county/parish governments that underpin modern civilization.

I received mine in TX a few months ago and am going through the protest. The two comps they used are a joke.
The appraisers are valuing my home at 25% greater than when I bought it less than 2 years ago. The two other comps were purchased about 2 years ago as well. One is being appraised at 2.5% greater than the purchase price and the other as -2% less than the purchase price.
I think I did well on the purchase but this discrepancy is a joke. The appraisers respond to questions with "we are overwhelmed and understaffed, please have patience." "
