Just Purchased Vehicle Online from Private Seller: When do I Involve LA DMV?

I recently purchased a vehicle from a private seller online and will be driving to Florida to pick it up within the coming weeks.
Anyone with experience, is there anything I need to do before picking up the car, as far as title or taxes? What tags do I use to drive the car from FL to LA?
Never done this before, so I wanted to ask.
Admins, if you can think of a more appropriate forum, please move.

Just print out something with some official sounding words and tape to the back window...Sorry, no real clue. It's just what I imagine with all of the different tags I see on the road (and it's probably true).

I'd assume you would bring the title and bill of sale to the Louisiana DMV. There, you'll register the vehicle in the state of Louisiana, surrender title and they'll issue you a new one (they mail them to you in a couple of weeks in Illinois), and they'll give you a license plate. Some states want their license plates back. I'd imagine the Louisiana DMV will most likely take the plate and send it to the Florida DMV.

Make sure you know how to contact your credit card company to report the scam.

Get a copy of the drivers licenses of those listed on the Florida title. You will need that at DMV in order to avoid paying double taxes.

And that is wrong... You buy the car for cash there with no taxes since it is a private sale. LA will assign a value to the vehicle based off of the title and you will pay taxes here when you register it. All you need to get is a Bill of Sale and a NOTARIZED title. Make sure you go with the seller to a Notary and have the title notarized when you both sign it. Have the notary witness and stamp the Bill of Sale as well. If the seller doesn't strip the FL plates, drive back with those on the car. If they take the plate, put a paper plate in the rear window that says something like "Private Purchase on 9/25/2015 and in transit to LA for registration".

Call your insurance company with the VIN and get them to issue you an insurance card for the vehicle. With insurance and the title, you shouldn't have any issues. I buy a lot of cars and this is how I always handle out of state vehicles that have to be driven back.

Please... like you don't know the routine. Get some shoe polish and write "IN TOW" across the back window. Then rent a beat up van to pull it back to LA.

But load the trunk with dope before you leave.

You forgot to add that he has to join the convoy. Make sure your new vehicle is a similar type that are being towed to Mexico that weekend or you won't fit in.

Do a notarized title transfer and inform them that you will be registering it in La and not Fl.
They should give you a temp tag or a bill of sale.
I've bought two cars out of state, just pay your taxes within the first thirty days of ownership.

Or just rent a uhaul truck and shove it in the back. Make sure the truck is to short so the back of the car is hanging out.

Not wrong.
Florida is not a notary state.
No notary required to transfer from FL to LA.
Just proof of residence of seller.
Not saying you cant use a notary, but why go through that trouble when a copy of license will suffice?
It's always been eaiser for me to just ask for copy of their license than paying a notary to stamp a piece of paper.

quote:"IN TOW" seems to work just fine. You can probably even get by w/o having to pay taxes
