As a person who has dealt with substance abuse issues with over 6 years clean now, I'd have to agree with some of the other posters here. I believe instead of calling a psychiatrist first, you should contact an inpatient rehab, or an intensive outpatient (IOP) facility first. The inpatient would mainly be if you need to detox or need a higher level of care and just need to get away from everything for a little bit. The IOP is close to inpatient, as far as groups and stuff would go, but it's usually for people who don't need to detox or for people to continue a high level of care when they get out of inpatient.

Once you get into one of those places, they will usually have their own psychiatrist on staff for you to see, or will evaluate you to see if you even need one. Some psychiatrist also deal with addiction, as often times with addiction, there will be a dual diagnosis (addiction and mental health). The only issue is, most psychiatrist will usually just put you on meds instead of really getting to the root of the problem, or at least as successfully as the other places will be able to. And I'm not saying you won't have a good psychiatrist, but it's often a factor of time and needing a greater level of care.

Regardless, you're on the right track and the most important thing is you've admitted to yourself you need help and are now seeking it.

I just thought I'd share from my own personal experience. Good luck man, it'll be hard but it can definitely be done. One thing I've learned, is if you have a setback, reach out and don't let it spiral out of control. Just know you definitely have someone pulling for you over here.

I’m gonna give you an early congratulations, man. Still a long way to go but Admitting the problem and taking those initial steps to seek help are often the hardest part and it’s great you’ve done that. Research in your area too, there undoubtedly clinics and support groups that can help as well.
I saw more family and friends than I care to say struggle similarly. You can beat it, always believe that. Keep fighting the good fight & I’ll be pulling for you! Best of luck

Thank you guys for all your support. I know I have a tremendous battle ahead of me and I plan on giving it hell. My main intentions was to bring awareness. I work in health care and see people struggle with addiction everyday and I have nothing but sympathy for these people and always wonder what they have been through to lead them to the place they are In. I know this road will be long and probably the most challenging thing I’ve ever faced in my life.

I was there too. Woke up and puked blood last spring, few hours later went to ER, kind of hung over but did not drink too much night before. Grateful it happened. Have not had a drink since. Feel much better.

I had a problem with opiates. Oxy, Methadone, Subutex. It’s a pretty shitty thing. The step process didn’t work for me, it’s a bunch of people sitting in a circle whining. I guess it can be good to hear other people experiencing the same thing. Eventually I just had enough and quit cold turkey on my own. Good luck

Good luck. If you're powerful enough to function when drinking that much you're powerful enough to beat the drinking.

Been a long time coming. I’m 35. I’ve been dealing with alcoholism since my early 20s. Ruined many relationships with family, friends, and significant others. I’m drunk right now. I consider myself a high functioning alcoholic. I think that means that despite my problems I can still perform at work and pay my bills. But I’ll leave that up to the expert. I always had trouble speaking to people I don’t know I’m person about my drinking habit. I pray I can overcome beacause i feel it’s starting to control me more than I wanted to admit. To anyone else who feels they are slowly losing themselves with substance abuse I wish you nothing but the best and hope you will pull through.

I can see why you consider yourself a high functioning alcoholic.

Your grammar and spelling are better than most sober people here.

Sounds to me like you want to be sober and are sick and tired of being sick and tired. Hold on to that, and don't ever let go. It is exactly what you need to stay sober. It's the driving force. In the world of recovery, there are a bunch of folks who get sober because the courts appointed them, or they were given ultimatums from friends and family, but the ones who come in like you are usually the ones that stay sober. Good luck man.
