I wouldn't say they're a waste of money so much as you can have a better vacation for similar money simply flying to a cool destination and setting your own itinerary.
But I'm mostly speaking about Carribean cruises. I have heard great things about Alaskan and Mediterranean cruises. An older guy I golf with took his wife on a ten day riverboat/wine cruise down the Rhone river through French wine country that I really want to try.

Everyone keeps saying they are cheap. Ours was 1200 per person. Is that considered cheap these days
You'r either an idiot at booking a cruise or just aren't a fun person.

because that is what these cruises basically are, being on a boat in the middle of the ocean with a bunch of riff raff, undesirables, and trash.
Never been on a cruise, eh?

Prob both
I hate flying but love cool beaches so it is perfect. I think it goes to Mexico Honduras and Belize

we looked into NCL also, but they nickel and dime you if you eat in their "specialty" restaurants... but you get the drink package if you book a certain room.
we did a 5 day on the elation not long ago, ended up less than 300 per person. no drink package though because both of us have to get it, and preggo obviously cant drink.
next will be RCL.

Would I want to spend a week on a boat with accnodefense?
I'd rather spend a week in Walmart.

Unless you are paying the upcharge and eating at the specialty restaurants, I'm having a hard time believing the food is "great" on any of the lower level ships.

I've been on like three Carnival cruises and have never had an issue with the food. Granted, I was in high school and college for all of them and was shitfaced so what do I know?

Exactly.
You probably would have said a Ponchos and Golden Corral served good food at that time.

Cruises are pretty fun and inexpensive for a family. The expense is the air fare if you live farther than reasonable driving distance from a port city that they leave from...

It's relative. Most people aren't pretending to be Anthony Bourdain

You ever price a Disney Cruise or even on one of the newer Royal Caribbean ships?
I enjoy Disney Cruises a lot but they are expensive. Carnival has been getting worse and worse after their issues a few year back and cut costs way too much. Royal is fine.

I got a cruise comped through a casino. So no I'm not trying too hard whatever that's supposed to mean

If you have a good time it's not a waste if money.

It depends.. Prior to the Triumph fiasco Carnival had some really good food in the dining room. Buffets are buffets. Their steakhouse is still excellent and kicks the ever living shite out of Sullivans and way better than the shite experience I had at The Palm last week. After the Triumph incident they are very avg. Nothing special.
RCCL food is ok. Nothing special. Upcharge places on some ships are special
Disney food is good. Not great but good. The upcharge places on the ships are as good as anything you will find in New Orleans. But also more expensive.

I've been shopping for a Disney cruise and it is $$$. Still trying to talk myself into it.
Thought we might be able to go during mardi gras, but that idea didn't work out. Started pricing mid to late may dates and it was almost $1,000 more.
If I give up on Disney, we might just end up getting on a Royal Carribean out of Florida or maybe Puerto Rico.
I want to go to real ports, not the shitty Mexican and western gulf places.

I did a Holland America to Alaska that wasn't bad.

I've been on a cruise by myself.
Needed to get away from all the insanity.
However, being on a boat as a single with nothing but couples and families kinda sucked.
Hope your experience is better than mine was. Hope you're going on a singles cruise. They do exist.

We loved the Disney cruise. I did not love flying to Miami. We booked the dawn bc it's out of Nola. Hopefully it is comparable but we will see.
