If he has a family history of heart disease that’s the biggest factor. I’ve seen people who run, work out, eat right, and are fit get quadruple bypasses. You can’t beat genetics.

My old man had 2. Eleven years apart. Heavy smoker, overweight drank a lot. Bad family history. The whole deal. You can modify all these risk factors except family history. Does he have diabetes?
Any specific questions? I’ve recovered a lot of post op hearts.

Legion is correct. I’ve got severe heart disease and I’ve never smoked, ate right, I’m not fat, and I work out six days a week.

The cards you’re handed at birth can be a bitch.

Sometimes I get upset with myself regarding how my attitude about food has changed. I went from eating fast food whenever possible, cooking meat-heavy dishes, eating white bread, white pasta, white rice to red-meat light, fish heavy whole grain meals with 5-7 servings of fruits/veggies a day while keeping hydrated. Sometimes I see videos from people back home drinking, eating BBQ, gumbo, etouffee, etc. and I feel sad that I let that part of myself leave. I think "What's the point of life if you're not having fun?" I still drink 1-2 nights a week, but typically no more than 2-3 units and rarely do I get really drunk anymore.

And then I see posts like this and it makes me remember why. Going out and getting drunk, eating shitty food is really fun and we still do go out to bar/club hopping every 3 months or so and have a good time, but those lifestyle choices have consequences. Sometimes your family history has more say than any healthy living, but a lot of these things can be prevented by getting serious about the way we live and our relationship with food.

My grandfather had triple bypass surgery a year before I was born. My dad said he was a heavy smoker when growing up but didn’t touch a cigarette after that. He passed 10 years later when I was 9

A buddy near that age had cancer, I'll take your buddies chances over his.
So far to my knowledge, you can't fix cancer.

A Physician I work with c/o chest him that day pain so he went down to the ED . Well his troponin level came back high . They wanted to Cath him that day . He told them he had to finish rounding. They found him down in a hallway. MI . 48 year old . I think genetics plays s big part . But smoking, eating crap , and not exercising sure doesn’t help!

All you baws need to get a calcium scan for about $100 to see what’s happening with your arteries.

It’s funny, because a calcium scan is how he found out.

The optimal score in his cohort is 0, with 200-400 being concerning. His score was a 4,000.

I’m going to schedule a calcium scan for myself.

Dad had a triple or quadruple a year ago. He's in great shape for early 70s, it was hereditary. 2 of his other 3 brothers also had it done. He's doing great. Sucked seeing him in the ICU after but it's all good.

Calcium scan is about $75 at Lakeshore in Mandeville I believe. I had one done and a full cardio work up. I’m in good shape and pretty young, but there are some heart issues in the family. It’s a good idea for everyone to get a baseline cardio evaluation and know if there are any pre existing issues/developing issues.

My dad dropped dead last year, was resuscitated and made it a few more weeks. He was very active and appeared to be healthy for his age. In hindsight, the only real symptom he had was that he appeared to be a little more tired than usual. He chalked it up to old age (low 70’s). A simple set of tests could have detected and most likely prevented the total occlusion of his LAD.

My brother had it at 47. But that's what happens when you smoke three packs of reds and drink over twenty drinks a day for thirty frickin years. He's two years older than me at 57 but looks 20 years older.

Does he still smoke and drink?

LIMA to jump a 99% blocked LAD. 45. Genetic heart disease. I was a dead man walking.
Tell your bro it's a walk in the park. They do them everyday.
You go in at 6:00. They shave your legs and chest, you rinse off, put on a paper robe in the prep room. You lay down on a comfy gurney, nurse sticks in an IV. Puts a little liquid Valium in it and says "relax, doc will be here in a minute",OK. Boy does that feel good. No worries. A bunch of docs come in the room talking,....,then, in an instant flash of time.....,"Mr. J, it's over you are in SEIU, it went great" WTF....to be continued.
