They had me on the hook until they started referring to their treatment options as "investments"

The father fixes her teeth, the husband pays for the boob job. The second husband gets the benefit of both.

Does the orthodontist ever tell someone they don’t need braces?

If your kid hasn't lost all their baby teeth yet, tell your dentist to frick off and stat looking for another one.

pediatric orthodontics was a racket when my kids were small, who recommends braces for baby teeth?

Well it is, kind of.

You don't want your child to have a jacked up grill.

Reminds me of that old corny joke about, "I just flew in from _____ and boy are my arms tired!"

Your version would be, "I just came back from kid's First Orthodontic Appt and boy is my a-hole hurting."

No but I had a dentist tell me that after the orthodontist put braces on. "Why the hell did you get braces? Your teeth are perfectly straight?"

It is an investment in your kid having nice chompers as opposed to a messed up grill for life.

Yes. My oldest didn't need them. My second got "Fast Braces" from the dentist and they worked great for probably half the cost of regular braces.

It's an investment for him and his colleagues as they now have a customer for life. The gum damage that will occur, even with good hygiene, will have your kid in periodontists and eventually oral surgeons, and implant specialists decades down the road in an effort to keep their own teeth.

Both of my kids will need them. My daughter has had 4 teeth pulled and will need a couple more because they won't fall out. My son is on track for the same thing.

I had braces as a kid. As an adult my teeth got crooked again.

Max out those HSA contributions.

Also the clear plastic stuff is as cheap as the old hardware, you just need to find one who does it. They make you weekly ones and mail them out, then after a while you're done. I had to deal with Billy Cannon's giant fingers in my mouth moving metal and ceramic around.

This thread just sent me down a rabbit hole about my old childhood dentist, Steven Ripple. Apparently there’s a group in BR that claim to have been traumatized by him? Wtf?

And no, they don’t.
