While we don't know the extent of how well he knew them, I have read that he worked out with them in the gym at his apt. He would surely have recognized their voices once the accent is thrown in.

There have been numerous instances like this one. The media runs with it every time, then buries the story once it is proven to be false. They will never stop running with it shouting racism as loud as they can. Never.
