This should clear up the debate on what is or is not an assault rifle. Fairly comprehensive graphic.

Yeah it appears most people don't know most assault rifles are semiautomatic.

Is it buried somewhere in the 60 page argument on whether or not the terrorist was a homosexual or not?

Most people don't know that the AR's and AK's available to the public for purchase are not actually assault rifles. To be a true assault rifle, it has to have selective fire.

This seems to be splitting hairs to me.... I've never really understood why gun fanboys get their panties in a wad whenever the press says assault rifle when explaining a store bought AR and/or AK... To the common man on the street said rifles are indeed assault rifles. Just seems like a really stupid thing to get hung up on.

Fwiw, I dig guns. Shoot em often. Fam has quite a few "black" guns and I don't get offended when one refers to them as assault rifles. Hell, I'd prolly describe them as such myself.

My son had one.

Unfortunately he lost it in a tragic floating accident in the kiddie pool.

Wrong. You should do a little research before posting incorrect information. AR as used in AR15 stands for Armalite Rifle. In the late 1950s, ArmaLite Corporation designed the AR10 which shoots 7.62mm. The AR15 was later designed as a lighter version of the AR10 and shoots 5.56mm. In 1959, ArmaLite sold the rights to the AR10 and AR15 to Colt. ArmaLite Corporation also produced different guns all with an AR designation.
AR5 is a 22 cal rifle. AR 7 is also a 22 cal rifle. AR17 is a shotgun. AR24 is a pistol. Lets get it right. AR does not stand for assault rifle.

Tell that to the ATF - they're expert at it.

Because they mess everything up about reporting any type of shooting incident. If we were to quit holding them to standards their reporting be accurate, how bad could it get? It's already terrible. Certainly you would agree with that - the modern state of journalism is unimaginably bad.

If we agree on nothing else, I think we can all agree that we need to ban weapons that kill dozens with a single trigger pull

I love how the one AR says AK and the AK says AR

But an AR can be converted to full auto, correct?

Because then, future "assault weapons ban" legislation will cover a lot more firearms than would be warranted under a stricter definition. That's why they blur the term. They want it to be as generalized and sweeping as possible.
